Retirement may mean rocking chairs and working on a golf swing for many.

For one Macon woman, it meant time to accomplish a lifelong goal.

68-year-old Carmel McIntyre took the free time to go back to school.

Originally from Zambia, Africa, McIntyre didn't finish her education because of civil unrest in her native country.

After moving to the US, she worked minimum wage jobs because she didn't have a GED.

Retirement and Central Georgia Technical College offered McIntyre the opportunity to earn it at last.

"When you're young, you worry about what people think, how you look, how you speak, where you came from. When you're over 60, you think, 'Who cares? I've got one opportunity, and I'm going to take it with both hands.'"

McIntyre is the oldest GED graduate in Georgia for 2013.

She'll be recognized next week at a ceremony in Atlanta.
