September is National Literacy Month, and students are encouraged to spend more time reading books.
At the start of the school day, Friday, Bibb County's school superintendent dropped by Vineville Academy to read a story.
Steve Smith read "Sleep Like A Tiger" by Mary Logue. It's about a child who doesn't want to go to sleep.
He told the kids that reading plays an important role in building one's imagination.
Smith says the visit was one of many. He's set a goal to visit all 40 of Bibb County's Schools by Thanksgiving.
"I just want to know a little bit more about the schools. I did spend 18 years here. Some of the schools are new. They didn't exist when I was here before. So, I'm trying to develop a personal relationship with the Principals, teachers, and students," Smith explained.
He says he started his visits three weeks ago.
