ATLANTA (AP) - School bus schedules that were recently distributed to Atlanta parents say some students will be picked up as early as 5:45 a.m. and will arrive nearly an hour before the first bell rings.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday that most elementary school students will be dropped off as early as 7:10 a.m. although school starts at 8 a.m. Last year, buses dropped students off at 7:30 a.m.
In June, the Atlanta Board of Education opposed having elementary schools start earlier and instead had middle and high school students begin 15 minutes later so the same buses could be used to transport elementary, middle and high school students.
The newspaper reports officials say the earlier bus schedule is expected to boost breakfast participation and shorten ride times for special-needs students.
