Governor Deal commended 58 Georgia teachers who earned their "Master Teacher" certification.
Three of those are teachers in Central Georgia: two in Houston County and one in Jones County, according to a release.
They are: Nell Phillips-Sciarro and Jeannie Smith, who both teach in Houston County and Beth Pettigrew, who teaches in Jones County.
This certification is based on "demonstrated excellence in student achievement and student growth for 2013," according to a release.
Master Teachers' teaching certificates automatically renew, as long as they qualify for Master Teacher status. A Master Teacher status lasts 7 years and is overseen by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
It's based on classroom performance, measured by the CRCT, documented student growth and outstanding professional practice.
