ATLANTA (AP) - A Haralson County middle school principal has been named the 2013 Georgia Middle School Principal of the year.

Georgia Department of Education spokesman Matt Cardoza says Brian Ridley, principal of Haralson County middle School in Tallapoosa, has been honored with the award by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals.

Cardoza says the school spent several years on the Department of Education's "needs improvement" list and was one of only eight in 2012 to be designated as a breakout school. The label is given to schools that record dramatic improvement in student achievement.

Ridley lives with his wife, Carmi, and their five children in Tallapoosa - about 60 miles west of downtown Atlanta.
