The big election may be over, but 5th graders practicing for a Veterans Day event in the auditorium at Northwest Laurens Elementary School in Dudley were waving flags and cheering for another winner, their teacher, Dana Myers.

Myers was nominated by her student, Jaric Williams, who wrote in a letter to 13WMAZ that his teacher "has a heart of love, and a passion to teach."

Myers has been teaching for 20 years, 10 years in Twiggs County and 10 years in Laurens County, where she has been working since 2002.  She teaches Math, and also Social Studies, which she calls her favorite subject, saying she enjoys teaching her students to be responsible citizens.

She says she's won awards previously that were nominated by other teachers, but this is her first award nominated by a student.  She says that makes the award more meaningful.  "You have a classroom full of students who want to learn, and that's the best, you couldn't ask for anything better."
