Rebekah Bowen, a Math teacher at Bleckley County Middle School in Cochran was surprised Wednesday when 13WMAZ came into her classroom with a camera to tell her she was this week's "My Teacher is Tops" winner.
Bowen was nominated by her student, Lindee Knowles, who wrote a letter to 13WMAZ. "I would like to nominate her becuase she is the nicest person you'll ever meet," she wrote in the letter. "She makes everything in math fun. For every subject we learn, she will have some kind of song to go to the beat of what we're learning."
Lindee says before going to middle school, Math was not one of her favorite subjects, but that changed because of Mrs. Bowen. Bowen previously taught high school Math and Science before coming to Bleckley for her first year.
But depite her short tenure, fellow teachers say she's already made a big impact. "I couldn't ask for somebody to dive in as hard as she's dived in," says teacher Shawn White. "She's just really bonded with the kids real quickly."
Working at Bleckley is a homecoming for Bowen, who grew up in Cochran. Her mother also teaches at the same school. Because of that, 13WMAZ was able to do a double surprise, bringing the camera as Bowen told her mom June NeSmith the big news.
As for the award, Bowen says she'll hang it either next to her large UGA sign, or next to a board in her classroom that says "Who's in the News." -- And today at least, that was Rebekah Bowen.
