The Bibb Board of Education Monday night extended an offer to retired Lowndes County School Superintendent Steve Smith to serve as interim superintendent, while the search to fill the role permanently continues.

Smith is a Macon native, who taught and coached at Central High School for seven years before taking over as principal for 11 more years. Before that, he spent five years teaching and coaching at First Presbyterian Day School.

Board members confirmed their choice with a unanimous vote after an Executive Committee meeting ended around 7 p.m.

If he accepts the offer, he will take over for Susanne-Griffin Ziebart, who has served as acting superintendent since the board voted Romain Dallemand out of his contract.

Wanda West, the board's newly elected president, says negotiations are still underway to determine a starting date and salary for Smith. She says a background check must also be completed before making the hire official.
