Georgia Power announced it plans to close its Plant Branch facility near Lake Sinclair in Putnam County by the end of 2015.

The move need approval from the state Public Service Commission.

They say economic conditions as well as envinronmental regulations were among the factors leading to its closure. "This is necessary for us to do what's in the best economic interests of our customers," says spokesperson Mike Williams.

Plant Branch is a coal-burning facility, and the move comes as Georgia Power plans to lean towards other forms of new energy.

But, the decision also means that the 229 employees of the plant will lose their jobs, and what people in Milledgeville say is a big economic driver will be gone.

"This is about the only good playing job left here in this town," says Shannon Clance of Milledgeville, who says the local economy would also suffer because other local businesses that relied on money from plant workers would also be gone.

Georgia Power is also closing other locations in Coweta, Glynn, and Chatham County.  Williams says for some of the employees, there may be opportunities to transfer to other Georgia Power facilities.
