ATLANTA (AP) - The troubled Atlanta VA Medical Center is taking steps to improve mental health care.
The Atlanta VA hosted dozens of local health care organizations and mental health advocates at a community mental health summit Friday. WSB-TV reports (http://bit.ly/16UPY6W ) the goal of the meeting was to share information and network.
The summit followed months of criticism of the center from federal investigators and members of Congress.
Federal investigators linked several deaths to the facility. One patient with a history of substance abuse and suicidal thoughts who was left alone in a waiting room at the center, where he got drugs from a hospital visitor and later died of an overdose.
The television station says the center is seeking best practices to keep other patients from falling through the cracks.
