COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Columbus leaders are breathing a sigh of relief after Army officials spared Fort Benning from troop cuts.

The post hosts 3,850 soldiers and 3,200 civilian employees. It was unclear during the realignment process whether the military would keep those jobs.

A coalition of city leaders met with Army officials, urging them to keep the base's workforce.

The group argued that taxpayers and the local community had invested too heavily in Fort Benning to scale back its operations now. Chamber of Commerce President Mike Gaymon told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that the decision over Fort Benning was the region's "most important economic development opportunity."
