Steven Spielberg's biopic Lincoln grabbed nominations in several of the top categories, including Daniel Day-Lewis for leading actor, Tommy Lee Jones for supporting actor, Sally Field for supporting actress and the film itself for outstanding cast.
Playbook, the comedy starring Bradley Cooper, also nabbed four nominations, for best cast, best actor (Cooper), best actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and supporting actor (Robert De Niro).
Argo, Ben Affleck's story of the Iranian hostage crisis, earned nominations for supporting actor for Alan Arkin and for outstanding cast.
Among the surprise nominations: Javier Bardem nabbing a supporting-actor nomination as an over-the-top villain in Skyfall. And few analysts expected to see the low-budget comedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel make SAG's top five for outstanding cast. In addition to Lincoln, Argo and Hotel, top film nominees are Les Misérables and Silver Linings Playbook.
Misérables represented itself well, earning nominations for Hugh Jackman as leading actor and Anne Hathaway for supporting actress.
Among the snubs: The political true-life story Zero Dark Thirty was shut out of best cast nominations, though it did earn a best-actress nomination for Jessica Chastain. Also shut out entirely: Quentin Tarantino's Djanjo Unchained.
In the television competition, Modern Family took the most nominations with four, followed by 30 Rock, whose final season landed three nominations.
The dramas Downton Abbey and Homeland and the HBO movie Game Change received three nominations.
The ensemble nominees for TV drama were Homeland, Downton Abbey, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad and Mad Men. TV comedies nominated for best cast were 30 Rock, Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, Glee, Nurse Jackie and The Office.
The SAGs will be presented Jan. 27.
