Friends and family members of slain Mercer University Law School graduate Lauren Giddings can now place a bench in her honor in a city park.

They asked council to allow them to put the memorial in one of Giddings' favorite spots, Washington Park.

Councilman Louis Tompkins sponsored legislation to set guidelines for all memorial donations, including the bench for Giddings.

That legislation passed a committee vote Monday night. It was also approved by full council Tuesday night.  The Giddings family can now move forward with installing the park bench for their loved one.

Family members told 13WMAZ they plan to dedicate the bench at a memorial concert in Washington Park on August 25th.
