The Veterans Warhawks football team is making a statement this season after its third year in the school's history, thanks a lot to the play of senior lineman, Cortez Broughton.
Head Coach David Bruce says, "Cortez is a good football player. He is hardnosed, physical, and very athletic. Runs to the ball very well, reads his keys exceptionally well, and he's a good leader. He leads on and off the field and we're really happy that's he's developed into that kind of young man, first and foremost, and also the kind of football player that he is today."
A natural athlete, Broughton grew up a Warner Robins All-Star on the Little League team that went to the World Series in Williamsport back in 2009, a game he misses, but has replaced the love with the pigskin.
"Oh, I miss it a lot. I miss the home runs, people cheering, and you get your fair shares, but I had to make a decision. But I kept basketball to condition me during the off season, so I had to drop one, but I do miss it, miss it a lot," says Broughton.
Out of the classroom, Broughton excels in the classroom with an 84 grade average. He has already verbally committed to Middle Tennessee State to play for the Blue Raiders.
Broughton says, "If I didn't have the grades, then the scouts wouldn't come so early, then I'd have to wait. Waiting could get you nothing, so grades are number one. That's why you're in school."
Coach Bruce says, "It's good to know he has a home already. MTSU is a quality school, a quality academic school. He wants to get into engineering, and I know he can fulfill his dreams there, and he's going to be a darn gone good football player for them there, too, and we're excited about that opportunity he's going to have. Every kid dreams of a scholarship, and he's getting one to a D1 school, and again, excited about the possibilities for him.
Sports is a family thing for the Broughtons, with his father being a standout along with older brother, Khalil, and other brother, Malik, who was a teammate with before graduating last year, but Cortez says he may have the edge on being the best.
"Malik had the jumping ability, Khalil has the hustle, and I got the girth, so I think I got the best out of all of them. I go out and do my best and the best comes," Broughton says.
