She comes from a family of Winners, but she definitely stands alone as a student athlete who is getting it done on the softball field and in the classroom.

Whenever this Veterans standout's name is called, it also serves as a description of her character: Winner. And Katlyn Winner is definitely winning.

Her coach, Mitch Horton, "You can also see her emerging as a leader. She's a junior this year. She's become more vocal for us and really works hard to keep the team together as well."

Katlyn started her career on the softball diamond after learning another game under the direction of her father.
"I learned to play baseball when I was 3," says Winner. "And when I turned 8, I started playing softball."

And the Lady Warhawks are benefitting because of that choice. The Hawks are 12-3 on the year thanks to the diversity of Katlyn playing several positions in the infield like catcher, first base and shortstop and, of course, because of her strong bat.

Horton explains, "She's done a great job for us, and in fact, she's done so well that we've moved her into the leadoff spot, so she really is setting the table for us. It's been a great addition for us."

"Yes, I learn a lot from my brother. Even though he is younger than me, he still teaches me stuff everyday," says Winner.

And not only is Number 9 running the bases on the diamond, but in the classroom, she carries a 3.8 GPA.
Winner says, "If you want to go far in softball, you have to have good grades, so it's hard struggling with both of them, but we manage to do it."

"This team is academically-motivated and athletically-motivated, so as a coach, it makes things a whole lot easier. We don't have to run behind them, and that's good, because they have their priorities in order. That makes for an easy time. We just practice and go home," Horton said.

And with a resume like that, it's no wonder that Katlyn Winner is a winner of this week's 'Athlete of the Week.'
Katlyn and her teammates beat Perry Thursday 5-2 to improve to 14-2. And Katlyn's brother, that she mentioned in the piece is Warner Robins Little League All-Star pitcher, Kody Winner.
