For the first time in fifteen years, the Warner Robins Demonettes have made it into the Elite Eight in the State Basketball Tournament. One senior is dumping in the points and making the grade in the classroom. Danielle Gazaway is our Athlete of the Week.
Warner Robins Head Coach Tom Mobley says Danielle Gazaway is one of the best players he's ever coached.
"She's the leading scorer for her career. She's scored over 1,400 points, but she's got a ton of rebounds and assists, so she's an all-around player," he said.
You might say Danielle Gazaway is a superhero on the court.
"I love Spiderman," Gazaway said with a grin.
She carries a Spidey backpack and powers her way through making good grades in the classroom.
Danielle has an 84 average with honors classes sprinkled in on her schedule. "Some subjects are easy, but economics is hard. I've got to go home and study every single day, but math is just a click for me. I love math," Gazaway said.
And she likes solving problems on the court. The Warner Robins girls have gone 23-6 this season and Head Coach Tom Mobley says Danielle is a big part of their success.
"Danielle can shoot, she can penetrate, she does a good job of getting off the ball in the passing lanes and making a steal. She's a really good passer. She sets up her teammates willing to give up a shot for someone to make a better shot," Mobley said.
And because of her talents on the court and in the classroom, Danielle is going to get a shot at playing at the next level.
She's verbally committed to play basketball at Alabama State.
"Yeah, Coach Jackson said that she sees me as a starting point guard my freshman year. She says all I have to do is work hard, keep my grades up, and stay focused, Danielle said.
"I think that's what attracted Danielle there, is she could play right away at Alabama State. She had some offers from some bigger schools, but I think she could be a go-to player pretty quickly in that program," Mobley said.
Just like Spiderman, the senior is weaving a web of success for the future.
Florida State has also shown some interest in Gazaway.
The point guard says she's not sure what she would like to major in in college.
She expressed some interest in becoming a physical therapist.
