Hello, everyone, and thank you for joining us.
I'm Frank Malloy.
Leah Johnson has the evening off.
A shooting tonight...just before eight'o'clock..left one man dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.
That's according to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones...who identified the victim as 50 year old Kenneth Cray of Warner Robins..
He also told us... The alleged shooter is in custody. Police have not been able to confirm that.
A Macon Police Dispatcher says it happened in the 1700 block of Cedar Street. That's between Wood Street and Giles Street.
In an e-mail, spokesperson Jami Gaudet says a woman named Jennifer Washington was in the home...and called her a person of interest.
Check back with 13WMAZ for updates on this story.
Tonight the man charged with stabbing a Lowes store employee in the parking lot about a year ago...faces the next twenty years in prison.
Robert Alvin Broady...63 years old...was found guilty of one count of aggravated assault...and one count of felony shoplifting.
He was both convicted and sentenced today in Chief Judge George Nunn's Houston County courtroom.
Back in February of 2012, District Attorney George Hartwig says Broady and one other man were caught shoplifting.
When a Lowes loss prevention officer at the store on Watson Boulevard confronted them, Hartwig says, Broady pulled out a knife and stabbed the employee in the chest...before the two took off in a car.
They were captured and charged thanks to Crimestoppers tips.
The D.A. Says both men had lengthy criminal records... Because of that... Broady won't be eligible for parole until he's served at least 13 years in prison.
The sheriff's office in Twiggs County has a new team member to help sniff out trouble.
Deputies welcomed Sugar...an 11 month old Bloodhound...to their ranks this morning.
Twiggs County already has 3 different breeds of shepherd...used for narcotics tracking...in its K-9 unit.
But Sugar has a special set of skills.
<sugar's use will be to find people. Whether they're lost or it's a criminal apprehension. She will be used to track people. We're very excited to have her on board.>
Sugar, like many hounds across the U.S., was donated by Mrs Ann Vinson, the owner of Bloodhound Haven in Twiggs County.
Macon Mayor Robert Reichert has a four prong plan to turn the city green.
Katelyn Heck explains some of his first projects... and how Reichert expects them to keep growing.
Workers planted these fourteen trees in Rosa Parks Square Thursday... Just a seedling of Mayor Robert Reichert's goal to grow the city's green effort.
<this is part of an ongoing effort to plant 250 trees a year. We're trying this year and may not quite make it since this was the initial year but this is something we're going to try to build into the budget and do on an ongoing basis.>
With all those trees... The city will need more space to plant them.
Demolition of the former Boys and Girls Club building on Second Street is expected to start in the next few weeks.
That space will become a city park as part of Reichert's Second Street Corridor Project.
<this is a great city to live, work, and play, and we need to put our best foot forward so visitors and tourists will be encouraged to learn more about us and our own citizens will have a sense of pride in their community.>
To keep new and existing green spaces clean... Volunteers pick up litter every Saturday... Already totaling over 6-thousand pounds of trash off the streets in the past month... With a third of it from Riverside Drive.
To keep some of that trash from piling up at the land fill... The city expanded its one-stream recycling program.
Folks in the Intown, Shirley Hills, Vineville, and Wimbush Road neighborhoods can now add glass bottles to their recycling bins.
<we appreciate the city giving us the opportunity to get more material out of the landfill and adding glass will help from letting it reach its way there.>
Reichert hopes more interest in beautifying the city will sprout as these programs continue to grow.
