Good evening.... Thanks for joining us.

I'm Suzanne Lawler... Frank Malloy and Leah Johnson have the night off...

We are just a little over 3 days away from going over the Fiscal Cliff

But... congressional leaders and President Barrack Obama met for a little more than an hour this afternoon - trying to get a deal... At the eleventh hour.
That wasn't enough time to reach an agreement -- but lawmakers in the Senate headed right back to Capitol Hill, charged with getting the job done.
Danielle Nottingham has more from the White House... On the race to avoid a tumble.

ARR-1))
TOP CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS MET WITH PRESIDENT OBAMA AT THE WHITE HOUSE... TRYING TO AVOID THE AUTOMATIC TAX HIKES AND SPENDING CUTS SET TO KICK IN JANUARY FIRST.
THE PRESIDENT CALLED THE MEETING "CONSTRUCTIVE" BUT REMINDED LAWMAKERS --- THERE'S NOT MUCH TIME LEFT.
((sot)) President Obama
"We're now at the point where in just four days every American's tax rates are scheduled to go up by law. "
((NARR-2))
SENATORS HARRY REID AND MITCH MCCONNELL RETURNED TO THE SENATE FLOOR, PLEDGING TO WORK THROUGH THE WEEKEND.
((SOT)) McConnell
"We are engaged in discussions - in the hopes that we come forward as early as sunday that we will have a recommendation."
((SOT)) Reid
"We're gonna do the best we can with the caucuses we have and the country that's waiting for us to make a decision."
((NARR-3)) (gfx)
DEMOCRATIC AND REPUBLICAN LEADERS HAVE AGREED TO EXTEND JOBLESS BENEFITS AND SOME TAX INCREASES -- BUT THE INCOME THRESHOLD IS NOT YET CLEAR.
((STANDUP BRIDGE)) Danielle Nottingham, CBS News, The White House.
THE PRESIDENT AND SENATE LEADERS ARE EXPRESSING OPTIMISM THEY'LL GET THE JOB DONE. BUT THE PRESIDENT HAS A BACKUP PLAN...JUST IN CASE.
((sot)) Obama
"If an agreement isn't reached in time, between Senator Reid and Senator McConnell, then I will urge Senator Reid to bring to the floor a basic package for an up or down vote."
((NARR-4))
THAT BARE-BONES BILL WOULD PRESERVE TAX CUTS FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS AND EXTEND UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS. IT WOULD ALSO LAY A FOUDNATION FOR A BROADER DEAL TO COME.
Senate Leader Harry Reid warned that not everyone will like the deal, no matter what he and Senator McConnell come up with.

If negotiations over that so-called fiscal cliff aren't enough to worry about...America's milk drinkers are also edging closer to what they're calling...the dairy cliff.

And experts say that could drive milk prices up to $7 dollars a gallon...or higher...in 2013... because the current federal farm bill expires in three days.
One of the things that bill covers...is milk price supports.
For decades...the federal government has agreed to buy milk from dairy farmers...if the market price gets too low.
That's to ensure a steady supply of milk...by ensuring that farmers will turn a profit.

<if dairy prices rise too fast to a higher level that folks can't afford, there are so many alternatives in the market place, from the power drinks to the nutrition drinks, the sodas, the waters and all that. That competition, people will switch.

But when the current program expires next week...the price supports will revert back to a law passed in 1949.
Milk actually cost more then... compared to what people earned.
And that law set a minimum price for milk...that would rise with inflation.
If that kicks in next week...it means the government would have to pay dairy farmers upwards of $7 a gallon for their millk.
And that cost would be passed along to you.

We do have a  follow up tonight:

A pair of roswell brothers are still missing this evening.
Police are using billboards around the state....in an effort to find them....
Authorities are also using newly released surveillance pictures of the boys.

9-year old Ben cleary and his 7-year old brother Henry... were last seen with their father Daniel Cleary six days ago in Chattanooga..
These pictures from a Walmart are from just before he was set to return them to their mother.
Instead... Police say Cleary turned off his phone, ditched his car, liquidated his assets..and disappeared.
Authorities say Daniel Cleary may be driving a silver Jeep Grand Cherokee.
In other news...  for several hours this morning... The website that posts alerts for missing people in georgia... Found itself hacked...
This is the message that greeted visitors to "alert news net dot org"...  A site maintained by the georgia association of broadcasters and linked to by the G-B-I..
Our sister station... 11Alive in altanta noticed the hack this morning... And sent several emails to the site administrator...
The site eventually returned to normal...
A threatened strike at container ports across the country is now on hold.

Officials say dock workers and management at the ports have come to an agreement on some key sticking points.
Dock workers had threatened to go on strike December 30th.... if they couldn't reach a deal.
That would have stopped work at 14 ports, including Savannah.
Experts said it could have potentially cost the economy a billion dollars a day.
The two sides have 30 days now to work out their issues, with a new deadline set for January 28th.
An Atlanta family is uncertain of what the future will hold  - after Russia banned Americans from adopting children.
Six years ago, the Suhs (soos) adopted their son from Russia.
They had just started the process of adopting a second child -  when President Vladmir Putin signed a bill today, barring any new American adoptions.
Now it's unclear what will happen to pipeline cases - where the adoption process had already begun.

A trip to a Dublin gas station apparently left some people with contaminated gas in their tanks... followed by a trip to an auto repair shop.

The owner of the BP station on Hillcrest Parkway told 13WMAZ's Katelyn Heck... He received 3-thousand gallons of fuel Monday morning.
Since then.... They've received several complaints about customers' cars shutting down.
Dominy Oil Company.... Which supplies their fuel... Says their inspector found water in the tanks.
Bruce Cabral...Service manager at Riverside Ford in Macon.... Says the ethanol in the gas separates from the water and causes the problems.

that means I've got this little blob of water moving around in the tank as I drive along, which is fine, until the fuel pump actually picks it up and sends it to the engine. Well, when I send that blob of pretty much all water and it gets sent to the engine, the engine doesn't run very well on the straight water mixture.>
One of the BP customers brought her car to Riverside Ford.
Cabral says the gas from the Dublin station does not look like a typical water-fuel mixture.
An inspector from the state department of agriculture is also expected to examine the fuel tanks today.

2013 is almost here!  So we're taking a look back at the big highlights of accomplishments that science made in 2012.

From a Mars landing to a deep water dive, scientists made some big breakthroughs in 2012.
John Zarrella shares the top 10 accomplishments that grabbed our attention.

AT NUMBER 10, A REVOLUTIONARY CAMERA CALLED LYTRO.
"It's such a powerful technology breakthrough that this will forever change how we all take and experience pictures."
THE CAMERA CAPTURES THE ENTIRE LIGHT FIELD ALLOWING THE PICTURE'S FOCUS AND PERSPECTIVE TO BE CHANGED AFTER IT'S BEEN TAKEN.
NUMBER NINE. NASA'S DAWN SPACECRAFT SENT BACK STAGGERING DATA ABOUT AN ASTEROID -- 325 MILES IN DIAMETER -- CALLED VESTA. IT APPEARS VESTA WENT THROUGH SOME STAGES OF PLANETARY EVOLUTION. IT'S ONE OF KIND IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM.
"What's clear to us is that Vesta appears to be the only intact proto-planet that's left."
NUMBER EIGHT. YOU MAY HAVE HEARD THE TERM GOD PARTICLE. SCIENTISTS CALL IT HIGGS-BOSON. THE EUROPEAN NUCLEAR RESEARCH ORGANIZATION CALLED CERN CLAIMS TO HAVE FOUND IT. WHY IS IT A BIG DEAL? THINK BIG BANG THEORY.
"And this particle we think was in fact, a particle like this, was the fuse that set off the explosion which created the universe."
RESEARCHERS FOUND IT AFTER ANALYZING DATA FROM PROTON COLLISIONS GENERATED BY A PARTICLE ACCELERATOR.
AT SEVEN, A LEAP OF FAITH! FELIX BAUMGARTNER'S RECORD-BREAKING JUMP.
BAUMGARTNER BROKE THE FREEFALL RECORD AND THE SOUND BARRIER JUMPING FROM 128 THOUSAND FEET IN A REVOLUTIONARY SPACE SUIT.
"I said I know the whole world is watching now and I wish the world could see what I see."
SIX. YOUNG CHILDREN DYING AT AN ALARMING RATE IN CAMBODIA AND WITH ALARMING SPEED.
IT WAS A MEDICAL MYSTERY
STREPTOCOCCUS, DENGUE AND A PATHOGEN CALLED EV71 WERE UNUSUALLY AGGRESSIVE. OUR DR. SANJA GUPTA WAS THERE WHEN THE MYSTERY WAS SOLVED.
"They found that those organisms in conjunction with these kids getting steroids probably led to such an aggressive course."
NUMBER FIVE. SPACE X BECAME THE FIRST COMMERCIAL COMPANY TO RENDEZVOUS AND DOCK A SPACECRAFT TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. IT MARKED A NEW BEGINNING: PRIVATE COMPANIES TAKING OVER FOR NASA SENDING CARGO AND EVENTUALLY HUMANS TO THE STATION.
NUMBER FOUR. SCIENTISTS FOUND THE GREAT BARRIER REEF, THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD, IS IN TROUBLE.
"Half of the coral on the Great Barrier Reef has disappeared over the last twenty-seven years. That's a momentous change."
SCIENTISTS ATTRIBUTE MUCH OF THE LOSS TO STORM DAMAGE.
AT NUMBER THREE. WE GO TO THE PACIFIC AND THE DEEPEST PART OF ANY OCEAN IN THE WORLD WITH FAMOUS FILM DIRECTOR AND EXPLORER JAMES CAMERON. FIRST, TEST DIVES.
"About five different systems failures that prevented me from going on."
FINALLY, IN A SUBMERSIBLE CALLED DEEP SEA CHALLENGER, CAMERON WENT DOWN 35 THOUSAND FEET.
NUMBER TWO. MELTING ICE. SCIENTISTS USING SATELLITE AND AIRCRAFT DATA HAVE FOUND THE GREENLAND AND ANTARCTIC ICE SHEETS ARE LOSING THREE TIMES AS MUCH ICE AS TWENTY YEARS AGO. GIANT RIFTS APPEARED IN PLACES LIKE THE ANTARCTIC'S PINE ISLAND GLACIER.
COMBINED ANTARCTICA AND GREENLAND HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO ONE FIFTH OF ALL SEA LEVEL RISE OVER THE PAST TWENTY YEARS.
AND OUR NUMBER ONE IS CALLED SEVEN MINUTES OF TERROR. THE ROVER CURIOSITY SURVIVED A HARROWING RIDE THROUGH THE MARTIAN ATMOSPHERE IN A LANDING METHOD NEVER BEFORE ATTEMPTED, PROMPTING AN OUTPOURING OF EMOTION FROM THE NASA TEAM.
CURIOSITY IS NOW ROAMING THE LANDING SITE HUNTING FOR THE SIGNATURES OF PAST LIFE: WATER, CARBON AND METHANE. IF IT FINDS ANY, CURIOSITY MIGHT WELL BE OUR NUMBER ONE AGAIN NEXT YEAR.
