ELECTION FEVER ISN'T OVER JUST YET... PEOPLE IN BIBB COUNTY STILL HAVE TO ELECT SOME SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS ON AUGUST 21ST.
THAT'S THE DATE SET ASIDE FOR THE STATE SENATOR RUN-OFF... BUT IT'S ALSO THE PRIMARY ELECTION FOR 8 DEMOCRATIC SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES.
CANDACE ADORKA INTRODUCES YOU TO THEM... STARTING TODAY WITH THE CANDIDATES IN DISTRICT ONE... WHICH COVERS EAST MACON.
YOUR OPTIONS FOR THE DISTRICT ONE SCHOOL BOARD SEAT ARE AS VARIED IN AGE AS THEY ARE BACKGROUND.
LETS START WITH MICHAEL MCKEEVER... THE 18-YEAR-OLD GRADUATED FROM HUTCHINGS CAREER CENTER IN 2011, AND IS NOW STUDYING BUSINESS MANAGEMENT AT MACON STATE COLLEGE.
HE SAYS HIS DECISION TO RUN FOR SCHOOL BOARD WAS BORN BACK IN FEBUARY.
"It started with me going on the record about how opposed to the Macon miracle when the controversial parts was out. 'the cutting of 300 teachers. That will increase the class sizes.' Those controversial parts were removed from the plan. And then after that, when the students at Central High School came down to protest and they was turned around. Didn't even get to speak to anybody, that was also an event that made me feel that they basically do whatever they want to and don't want to be held accountable."
ONE OF HIS OPPONENTS IS BRENDA SUTTON... AT AGE 55, SHE IS THE DIRECTOR OF MEDIATION FOR THE HOUSTON AND MACON JUDICIAL CIRCUITS... AND IN THAT CAPACITY... SHE SAYS SHE SAW THE SHORTCOMINGS OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM... AND EVENTUALLY DECIDED TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION.
"I saw things such as discipline issues. Also, learning challenges that were not met by the school system itself, some of these children had fallen thorugh the cracks. Didn't get the proper testing so therefore they acted out. Um, issues with administration, with the actual leadership and the way is was ran. And once I started going to the school board meetings, I noticed that instead of the shcool board actually governing administration, administration governed the school board."
THE SEAT IS CURRENTLY HELD BY ELLA CARTER.
THE 75-YEAR-OLD WAS A TEACHER AND ADMINISTRATOR IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR A COMBINED 47 YEARS.
SHE SAYS SHE'S BEEN PART OF BIG CHANGES IN EDUCATION... INCLUDING THE END OF RACIAL SEGREGATION... NOW SHE SAYS SHE WANTS TO BE PART OF THE NEXT BIG EVOLUTION.
"We've got a wonderful opportunity to grow our children with new programs and to move with the change and offer the best education possible for these students and I'd love to be a part of that. I still think it's a point in time with the technological status what it is that I still have something to offer."
I ASKED THE CANDIDTES WHAT THEY BRING TO THE TABLE... AND NOT SURPRISINGLY... THEY EACH SAY THEIR STRENGTH LIES IN THEIR INDIVIDUAL BACKGROUNDS.
Carter: "You can walk in a classroom and pick up the culture of a classroom one you've had that kind of experience. And if I have anything to offer its toward the instructional part of what's going on in our county, and I know I have to be a good steward of finances, but primary to me is empowering teachers so they can go in classrooms and make a difference."
Sutton: "The climate right now is just highly explosive. It's dysfunctional, there is role confusion, there is too much emphasis on administration rather than the children and so as a mediator, I would use my skills to redirect back to the issues which is what mediation is all about."
McKeever: "My ability to go out and talk to the students hands on, go talk to the parents and that's what I feel like I would bring to the table and like I said making sure the concerns are met."
THE DISTRICT'S STRATEGIC PLAN WILL BE ROLLED OUT STARTING THIS SCHOOL YEARS... SO THE WINNER OF THIS FOUR-YEAR TERM WILL HAVE A HAND IN HOW THE SO-CALLED MACON MIRACLE PLAYS OUT.
Sutton: "I believe the Macon Miracle is a start. It's a plan. It's a road map to what we could do. My challenge with the MAcon Miracle is that the items were not prioritized and there were just too many of them, and so we're being pulled in so many different directions and what we need leadership o do, is to prioritize."
Carter: "i think it's workable, but I think we have to give it a chance. It needs some tweaking from time to time and that's where we come in. And I think we will come in in time on that, but I've been impressed with the movements we're going to make doing something else about discipline."
McKeever: "The improvement in the technology where they plan in the plan to have computers at home for students who are underprivileged and cannot afford it, I support all of that, and then advancing the technology to enhance education, that's always a plan."
THE DISTRICT ONE CANDIDATES ARE ALL DEMOCRATS, AND THERE IS NO REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE, SO UNLESS THERE IS A SUCESSFUL WRITE IN, ONE OF THEM WILL TAKE OFFICE NEXT YEAR.
