PRESIDENT BASHAR ASSAD'S TROOPS SAY THEY HAVE RECAPTURED PARTS THE COUNTRY'S LARGEST CITY. US DEFENSE SECRETARY LEON PANETTA SAID ASSAD'S LATEST ATTACK IS PROOF THAT THE GOVERNMENT LACKS THE LEGITMACY TO RULE.

(:26-:31) (SOT U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta)

If they continue this kind of tragic attack on their own people in Aleppo, I think it ultimately will be a nail in Assad's own coffin.

ASSAD'S REGIME HAD BEEN STRUGGLING TO MAINTAIN POWER OVER THE LAST TWO WEEKS AFTER REBELS MADE MAJOR ADVANCES IN THE COUNTRY'S TWO LARGEST CITIES. BUT ON SUNDAY GOVERNMENT FORCES DECLARED VICTORY IN DAMASCUS AND USED HEAVY ARTILLARY AND HELICOPTERS IN ALEPPO...A CHALLENGE FOR THE REBELS , MANY OF WHOM ARE POORLY ARMED.

(:51-1:05) (SOT U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta) the key right now is to continue to bring that pressure on syria. To provide assistance to the oppostive and to provide whatever kind of humanitarian and we can

DESPITE THE LATEST BATTLE, BOTH SIDES SHOW LITTLE SIGN OF GIVING UP.
