GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US.

I'M LEAH JOHNSON...

FRANK MALLOY HAS THE NIGHT OFF.

OUR TOP STORY TONIGHT IS THE DAMAGE LEFT BEHIND BY POP-UP THUNDER STORMS THAT ROLLED THROUGH PARTS OF OUR AREA TONIGHT.

IN JONES COUNTY... THIS TREE TOPPLED IN THE MIDST OF GUSTY WINDS.

THAT PICTURE'S FROM CORAL WAY RIGHT OFF NEW CLINTON ROAD.

HERE'S ANOTHER ONE.

THOUSANDS OF HOUSEHOLDS ALSO FOUND THEMSELVES WITHOUT POWER.

GEORGIA POWER SAYS ABOUT 21 HUNDRED HOMES IN MACON ARE IN THE DARK.

THAT'S IN THE SHURLING DRIVE AREA... NOT FAR FROM OUR TV STATION.

ALSO AFFECTED... ABOUT 12-HUNDRED-13 HOUSEHOLDS IN GORDON.

FLINT E-M-C REPORTS MORE THAN 600 CUSTOMERS WITHOUT POWER IN FORT VALLEY.. AND LESS THAN TEN IN WARNER ROBINS.

IF YOU'RE A GEORGIA POWER CUSTOMER.. AND YOU WANT TO REPORT AN OUTAGE...THAT NUMBER IS 1-888-660-5890.

IF YOU'RE ON FLINT E-M-C, CALL 1-888-354-6836.

CREWS ACROSS CENTRAL GEORGIA WILL BE WORKING THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT UNTIL ALL POWER IS RESTORED.

WE CONTINUE OUR WEATHER COVERAGE TONIGHT WITH CHIEF METEOROLOGIST BEN JONES IN THE WEATHER CENTER.

BEN... WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FOR THE REST OF THE EVENING?

MEMBERS OF THE GEORGIA N-DOUBLE-A-C-P TOOK A STAND AGAINST THE TRANSPORTATION SPECIAL PURPOSE LOCAL OPTION SALES TAX TODAY.

THE GROUP'S PRESIDENT... EDWARD DUBOSE SAYS HE'S CONCERNED THE T-SPLOST WILL NOT BENEFIT MINORITY AND WOMEN WORKERS.

HE THINKS THE STATE ALREADY UNDER-EMPLOYS THOSE TWO GROUPS... AND BELIEVES THAT'LL CONTINUE EVEN IF THE TAX PASSES.

DUBOSE AND THE N-DOUBLE-A-C-P WANT LAW MAKERS TO RETHINK THE LANGUAGE OF THE T-SPLOST... TO BE MORE FAIR TO THOSE IN LOWER AND MIDDLE-CLASS INCOME BRACKETS.

MAKE NO MISTAKE, WE KNOW THAT THE ROADS NEED TO BE REPAIRED, BUT IF WE'RE DRIVING ACROSS A REPAIRED ROAD, AND WE DONT HAVE MONEY IN OUR POCKETS, THE FEELING IS STILL THE SAME

THE GEORGIA SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE.... AND THE GEORGIA BLACK CONSTRUCTORS ASSOCIATION ALSO OPPOSE THE T-SPOST.

THE CITY OF MACON IS WORKING ON A CONTRACT WITH ALEX HABERSHAM FROM MACON BLACK PAGES TO REPRESENT MINORITY AND WOMEN BUSINESSES.

HABERSHAM SAYS HE'S MORE OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE TAX'S BENEFITS.

HE SAYS... "IF PEOPLE IN LEADERSHIP POSITIONS APPROACH IT IN THE RIGHT MANNER, IT WILL ACCOMPLISH A LOT WITH EQUAL DISTRIBUTION OF CONTRACTS."

HABERSHAM ALSO SAYS... "BASED ON THE ECONOMIC IMPACT IT COULD HAVE... IT COULD BE A GOOD THING."

TAXPAYERS WILL MAKE THEIR DECISIONS... IN FIVE DAYS... ON JULY 31ST.

MEANWHILE... THE BIBB COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT ROLLED OUT A CONTROVERSIAL PART OF THE MACON MIRACLE STRATEGIC PLAN TODAY.

ABOUT 150 TOP DISTRICT OFFICIALS... DIRECTORS... PRINCIPALS AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS... DEPARTMENT HEADS AND OTHERS... RECIEVED THE FIRST HALF OF THE SO-CALLED "BEYOND DIVERSITY" TRAINING BY THE PACIFIC EDUCATION GROUP.

DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT SUSANNE GRIFFIN-ZIEBART TOOK THE TRAINING WHEN SHE WOKED IN ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA.

SHE SAYS THE PROGRAM GIVES PARTICIPANTS THE TOOLS TO HAVE PRODUCTIVE DISCUSSIONS ABOUT RACE AND HOW IT AFFECTS STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT.

"RACE IS SUCH AN EMOTIONAL ISSUE, THAT HAVING SOME PROTOCOL, HAVING SOME PRACTICE HAVING THOSE CONVERSATIONS BEFORE WE TAKE IT INTO OUR SCHOOLS AND START TO TALK ABOUT THE DISPARITIES THAT ARE OCCURING BETWEEN CHILDREN IN OUR SCHOOLS AND HOW WE'RE GONNA ADDRESS THEM IS GONNA BE CRITCALLY IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THAT THE CONVERSATION IS AN IMPORTANT ONE AND NOT DIVISIVE."

THE TRAINING WRAPS UP TOMORROW.

GRIFFIN-ZIEBART SAYS IT COST 18-POINT-5 THOUSAND DOLLARS.

SHE SAYS THE GROUP OFFERS MORE TRAINING BUT RIGHT NOW... NO CONTRACTS HAVE BEEN SIGNED FOR ADDITIONAL SESSIONS.

FOR THE FULL INTERVIEW WITH GRIFFIN-ZIEBART... LOOK FOR THIS STORY ON OUR WEBSITE, 13 WMAZ DOT COM.

SOME ACTIVISTS SAY GEORGIA BASED CHICK-FIL-A IS SEVERELY LACKING IN SENSTIVITY TO GAY RIGHTS.

THE LATEST UPROAR IN THE NATION'S CULTURE WARS BEGAN EARLIER THIS MONTH WHEN CHICK-FIL-A PRESIDENT DAN CATHY SAID HE WAS AGAINST SAME-SEX MARRIAGE.

CATHY HAS BEEN AN OUTSPOKEN CONSERVATIVE FOR DECADES... AND OFTEN IDENTIFIES HIMSELF AS A STRICT SOUTHERN BAPTIST.

BUT CATHY'S STATEMENT HAS FIRED UP GAY RIGHTS GROUPS, WHO ARE CALLING FOR A BOYCOTT.

CITY LEADERS IN BOSTON AND CHICAGO SAY THE RESTAURANT IS NOT WELCOME THERE AND THE JIM HENSON COMPANY HAS YANKED ITS MUPPET TOYS FROM KIDS' MEALS.

MEANWHILE, CHICK-FIL-A SUPPORTERS HAVE ANSWERED EMPHATICALLY.

FORMER ARKANSAS GOVERNOR MIKE HUCKABEE HAS DECLARED WEDNESDAY "CHICK-FIL-A APPRECIATION DAY" AND THE REVEREND BILLY GRAHAM SAYS HE PLANS TO EAT THERE NEXT WEEK.

EARLIER THIS WEEK THE GEORGIA SUPREME COURT GRANTED A STAY OF EXECUTION TO DEATH ROW INMATE WARREN HILL..

THEY AGREED TO CONSIDER HIS APPEAL.... INVOLVING A RECENT CHANGE TO THE STATE'S EXECUTION DRUG PROTOCOL.

STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL SAM OLENS ASKED THE COURT TO EXPEDITE THE CASE... ARGUING THAT WAITING TO REVIEW IT WILL HALT EXECUTIONS IN GEORGIA UNTIL THE CASE CAN BE HEARD.

THE COURT DENIED THAT REQUEST TODAY.... AND OPENING ARGUMENTS ARE SET FOR NOVEMBER. HILL WAS SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR THE 19-90 KILLING OF A FELLOW INMATE.... WHILE ALREADY SERVING A LIFE SENTENCE FOR THE MURDER OF HIS GIRLFRIEND AT THE TIME.

JERRY SANDUSKY'S CONVICTION ON DOZENS OF CHILD SEX ABUSE CHARGES WAS BASED ON THE TESTIMONY OF EIGHT YOUNG MEN. EACH TESTIFIED HOW THE FORMER PENN STATE ASSISTANT COACH OFFERED FRIENDSHIP AND FOOTBALL TICKETS IN EXCHANGE FOR PHYSICAL CONTACT, AND IN SOME CASES, SEX.

MISSING FROM THE WITNESS STAND WAS VICTIM #2 - THE YOUNG BOY WHOM FELLOW COACH MICHAEL MCQUEARY SAID HE SAW BEING RAPED BY SANDUSKY IN A PENN STATE SHOWER IN 2001. HE WAS NEVER NAMED.

BUT NOW, ATTORNEYS REPRESENTING A MAN WHO SAYS HE WAS THAT BOY SAY THEY WILL SUE THE SCHOOL. IN A STATEMENT, THEY SAY "OUR CLIENT SUFFERED EXTENSIVE SEXUAL ABUSE OVER MANY YEARS BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER THE 2001 INCIDENT...." AS PROOF, THE FIRM RELEASED PORTIONS OF TWO VOICE MESSAGES THEY SAY SANDUSKY LEFT FOR THEIR CLIENT JUST LAST SEPTEMBER - LESS THAN TWO MONTHS BEFORE HIS ARREST.

"PROBABLY OUGHT TO JUST GO FORWARD. I WOULD BE VERY FIRM AND EXPRESS MY FEELINGS. BUT, UH, YOU KNOW, THERE IS NOTHING REALLY TO HIDE...."

THE ATTORNEYS SAY SANDUSKY KEPT TRYING TO CONTROL THEIR CLIENT RIGHT UP UNTIL HIS ARREST... OFFERING FOOTBALL TICKETS, AS OTHER WITNESSES TESTIFIED... AND TELLING THE YOUNG MAN THAT HE LOVED HIM.

"JUST CALLING TO SEE YOU KNOW WHETHER YOU HAD ANY INTEREST IN GOING TO THE PENN STATE GAME THIS SATURDAY. // I HOPE TO TALK TO YOU LATER... THANKS. I LOVE YOU."

PENN STATE HAS NOT COMMENTED ON THE POTENTIAL LAWSUIT. SANDUSKY FACES LIFE IN PRISON.

THE ATTORNEYS SAY THEY'LL ALSO SUE OTHERS IN CONNECTION TO THEIR CLIENT'S ABUSE, AND QUOTE -- "THE HORRIFIC CONDUCT" THAT ALLOWED IT TO CONTINUE.
