EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11 STARTS NOW

When you have an opportunity to visit with families who have lost their loved ones, as I described to them, I come to them not so much as president as I do as a father and as a husband. And I think the reason stories like this have such an impact on us is because we can all understand what it would be to have somebody that we love taken from us in this fashion.

THE GRIEF-STRICKEN COMMUNITY OF AURORA, COLORADO, IS TRYING TO HEAL TOGETHER AFTER FRIDAY'S MASS SHOOTING.... WITH A PRAYER VIGIL... AND A VISIT FROM PRESIDENT OBAMA.
AS TERESA GARCIA REPORTS... AUTHORITIES ARE MAKING THEIR CASE AGAINST ACCUSED SHOOTER JAMES HOLMES... WHO IS PREPARING FOR HIS FIRST COURT APPEARANCE TOMORROW.

((STANDUP BRIDGE)) Teresa Garcia, CBS News, Aurora Colorado

HOLMES IS IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT. HE HAS HIS FIRST COURT APPEARANCE MONDAY MORNING... WHERE A JUDGE IS EXPECTED TO TELL HIM THAT HE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR 12 MURDERS.

TODAY THE FAMED STATUE OF JOE PATERNO OUTSIDE BEAVER STADIUM ON PENN STATE'S CAMPUS.... WAS UPROOTED FROM THE GROUND WHERE IT STOOD FOR OVER A DECADE.

IN THE MIDST OF A CROWD OF ABOUT 150 PEOPLE CHANTING "WE ARE PENN STATE" .... THEY LIFTED THE STATUE OFF IT'S BASE USING A FORKLIFT... AND MOVED IT INTO BEAVER STADIUM.

HERE'S A LOOK AT WHAT THE STATUE LOOKED LIKE BEFORE... AND FOR THE LAST 11 YEARS

AND THIS WAS THE SCENE TODAY... AFTER CONSTRUCTION WORKERS TORE IT DOWN.

THE UNIVERSITY CITED THE INVESTIGATION THAT FOUND THE LATE COACH... AND THREE OTHER TOP PENN STATE ADMINISTRATORS.... CONCEALED SEX ABUSE CLAIMS AGAINST RETIRED ASSISTANT COACH JERRY SANDUSKY... AS THE REASON FOR THE REMOVAL.
THE PULLING DOWN OF THE STATUE SENT MIXED EMOTIONS THROUGH THE COUNTRY....

PENN STATE PRESIDENT ROD ERICKSON RELEASED A STATEMENT THIS MORNING SAYING... QUOTE
I BELIEVE THAT... WERE IT TO REMAIN.. THE STATUE WILL BE A RECURRING WOUND TO THE MULTITUDE OF INDIVIDUALS ACROSS THE NATION AND BEYOND WHO HAVE BEEN THE VICTIMS OF CHILD ABUSE."

THE WHITE HOUSE SAYS PRESIDENT OBAMA BELIEVES REMOVING THE STATUE WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO... BUT NOT EVERYONE AGREES

I do not believe the statue should be removed, they're tarnishing the reputation of a very good man who did a lot for his school and his state.
Well, I think that the statue being there is going to be a constant reminder of the situation that went on and I believe that problem is going to continue until such time as they can erase the reminders of that.

THE FAMILY OF THE LATE PATERNO RESPONDED TO THE STATUE REMOVAL SAYING IT DOES NOT SERVE THE VICTIMS OF THE SEX ABUSE SCANDAL AND THAT THE ONLY WAY TO HELP THE VICTIMS WAS TO UNCOVER THE FULL TRUTH.
NOW THE N-C DOUBLE A SAYS IT WILL HAND DOWN QUOTE "CORRECTIVE AND PUNITIVE MEASURES" AGAINST PENN STATE.. TOMORROW AT 9 A-M.
TURN TO CAMERA TWO
FOR MORE WE TURN TO OUR SPORTS ANCHOR COURTNEY LYLE...
COURTNEY... HAS THE N-C DOUBLE A GIVEN ANY INDICATION AS TO WHAT THESE PUNISHMENTS MIGHT BE?
Courtney talks about how they haven't given any hints.. but they have said the school will not get the death penalty (briefly explain what that means and touch on SMU if you want)
SINCE THE INCIDENTS SURROUNDING THE CASE DIDN'T HAPPEN ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD... OR DIRECTLY IMPACT A GAME... WHY IS THE NCAA DOING THIS
Courtney talks about how the NCAA says the case points to a lack of institutional control and widespread acts of unethical conduct by high-ranking senior administrators... also talk about how There has not been an infractions committee hearing regarding the Penn State case, which suggests the NCAA and university might be in agreement on the sanctions.
SO AFTER SANDUSKY'S CONVICTION AND THE PENALTIES THE NCAA WILL ANNOUNCE TOMORROW... CAN WE EXPECT ANYTHING MORE TO COME FROM THIS?
Courtney talks about how the NCAA penalties could be just the beginning of sanctions for Penn State since the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Education are conducting investigations into the school's actions in relation to the scandal.
JENNIFER
THANKS COURTNEY... WE'LL SEE YOU LATER IN THE SHOW
