A FACELIFT FOR SECOND STREET IN MACON COULD BRING IN MORE THAN SEVEN-THOUSAND NEW JOBS ACCORDING TO A COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COMPANY.
COMMUNITY LEADERS TOLD KATELYN HECK WHY THEY THINK... REVAMPING ONE STREET WILL BRING POSITIVE CHANGE FOR AN ENTIRE CITY.
<<
EMPTY SIDEWALKS... AND CLOSED UP BUILDINGS...THESE ARE NOT THE SITES MACON MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT WANTS TO SEE ALONG SECOND STREET.
(SOT:i see people window shopping at retail establishments that are all along the street. I see people having a meal at a sidewalk cafe. I see beautiful architecture and green spaces)
HUNTLEY PARTNERS AND C-H-A COMPANY REVEALED THEIR IDEAS TO MAKE REICHERTS VISION COME TRUE.
THEY SAY THEIR PLAN COULD BRING IN MORE THAN 7-THOUSAND NEW JOBS OVER A 25 YEAR PERIOD.
THOSE JOBS WILL STEM FROM GROWTH IN MEDICAL... INDUSTRIAL... RETAIL.... AND RESIDENTIAL AREAS, AND A LOT OF THAT DEVELOPMENT WILL CENTER AROUND THE SECOND STREET CORRIDOR, WHICH INCLUDES FIXTURES LIKE HOSPITALS, RESTAURANTS, OFFICES, AND LOCALLY-OWNED SHOPS.
BUT ALL OF THAT EXPANSION... WILL COME A HEAVY PRICE TAG.
(SOT: we do have the tax allocation district in place, so that's a potential source of some significant funds, there's about 8 million dollars in splost budget for second street corridor redevelopment so there are already some things that are in place that are commited. a lot of this is going to come from private funding if its successful.)
THE PLAN ESTIMATES THOSE PRIVATE INVESTORS WILL MAKE A ONE-POINT-THREE BILLION DOLLAR IMPACT WITHIN 25 YEARS.
BUT HUNTLEY PARTNERS SAYS FINDING THAT KIND OF MONEY WON'T BE THE CITY'S ONLY CHALLENGE.
(SOT: we've got a lot of land area, 700 plus acres and basically what we want to do is identify some catalytic projects that can get development and investment rolling)
RESEARCHERS SAY MACON ALREADY HAS A GOOD BONE STRUCTURE... BUT REICHERT BELIEVES THE PLAN WILL TURN SECOND STREET INTO THE SPINE OF THE CITY.

HUNTLEY PARTNERS AND C-H-A COMPANIES WILL SPEND THE NEXT NINE MONTHS LAYING OUT THE DETAILS OF THE PLAN.... LIKE BREAKING DOWN THE COST... AND DRAWING UP A BLUEPRINT FOR THE PROJECT.
THEY ALSO WILL RESEARCH THE PROS AND CONS OF USING A STREET CAR OR A BUS SYSTEM TO CONNECT THE CITY'S MAJOR LANDMARKS.

BIBB COUNTY SCHOOLS HAVE CONSISTENTLY UNDERPERFORMED IN C-R-C-T SCORES COMPARED WITH STATE LEVELS... BUT ONE SCHOOL IS DIGGING ITS WAY OUT OF THAT HOLE.
ACCORDING TO DISTRICT C-R-C-T PROJECTIONS... APPLING MIDDLE SCHOOL WILL BE THE ONLY SCHOOL TO MAKE GAINS IN EVERY SUBJECT, IN EVERY GRADE.
PRINCIPAL STEVE JONES TOLD CANDACE ADORKA THAT THEY STILL HAVE THE MOST ROOM TO IMPROVE IN SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES.
"So we're taking a new shift in the middle school to omphasize more in the science department. S there'll be a lot more labs. Hands on activities for students."
"What is it about science and social studies that makes it so far below reading and math?"
"What ive heard is that for many years the science and social studies scores did not count in the AYP projections... "
APPLING MADE ITS GREATEST GAINST IN 8TH GRADE SCIENCE... 45 PERCENT OF STUDENTS MEET THE MARK.. COMPARED TO 21 PERCENT LAST YEAR.
JONES SAYS THEY WANT TO GET THAT NUMBER TO 75 PERCENT NEXT YEAR.
