President Obama: "It makes no sense to expel talented young people who for all intents and purposes are Americans, they've been raised as Americans. Understand themselves to be part of this country. To expel these people who want to staff our labs, or start new businesses or defend our country simply because of the actions of their parents. "
PRESIDENT OBAMA SAYS THIS COUNTRY MIGHT BE DEPORTING GREAT POTENTIAL.
HE HOPES HIS NEW POLICY WILL HELP CURB THAT FLOW... BUT SOME SAY IT DOESN'T GO FAR ENOUGH.
GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US... I'M LEAH JOHNSON.
FRANK MALLOY HAS THE NIGHT OFF.

THE WHITE HOUSE CAME OUT WITH A BIG CHANGE TO IMMIGRATION POLICY TODAY... AND REPUBLICANS IMMEDIATELY CRITICIZED THEM FOR PLAYING POLITICS WITH THE ISSUE BY TRYING TO WIN SUPPORT OF THE HISPANIC VOTERS.
PAT SAINT CLAIRE BREAKS DOWN WHO THE CHANGE WILL AFFECT AND THE POLITICS THAT DROVE IT.

THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCED A MAJOR CHANGE IN IMMIGRATION POLICY.
Effective immediatley DHS is taking steps to lift the shadow of deportation from these young people.
THE GOVERNMENT WILL STOP DEPORTING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WHO CAME TO THE COUNTRY AS CHILDREN IF THEY MEET CERTAIN REQUIREMENTS....A MEASURE AFFECTING SOME 800,000 PEOPLE
TO QUALIFY, YOU MUST CURRENTLY BE UNDER AGE 30,
HAVE COME TO THE U.S. BEFORE AGE SIXTEEN,
HAVE LIVED IN THE U.S. CONTINUOUSLY FOR FIVE YEARS,
BE A STUDENT OR GRADUATE, OR SERVED IN THE MILITARY,
AND HAVE NO CRIMINAL RECORD.
HOMELAND SECURITY SECRETARY JANET NAPOLITANO SAYS YOUNG IMMIGRANTS ARE UNFAIRLY PUNISHED WITH DEPORTATION.
There is this group of young people brought here through no fault of their own, theyve often never been to their country of origin, they dont speak the language, theyr'e in school, the military, not been in trouble with the law.
FOR IMMIGRANTS LIKE THIS YOUNG WOMAN AT A CALIFORNIA RALLY ITS AN EMOTIONAL MOMENT.
Im here with my mother.. I called her and she was crying.. you have all these opportunities now and Im like wow, mom thats true, (emotional) but im going to keep on fighting for you.
REPUBLICAN CRITICS MAINTAIN THAT ILLEGAL IS ILLEGAL - NO MATTER WHAT.
FLORIDA SENATOR MARCO RUBIO SAID IN A STATEMENT THAT WHILE IT WOULD BE WELCOMED BY KIDS DESERATE FOR AN ANSWER, IT WAS QUOTE
"... A SHORT TERM ANSWER TO A LONG TERM PROBLEM. AND BY ONCE AGAIN IGNORING THE CONSTITUTION AND GOING AROUND CONGRESS, THIS SHORT TERM POLICY WILL MAKE IT HARDER TO FIND A BALANCED AND RESPONSIBLE LONG TERM ONE."
REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE MITT ROMNEY REMARKED ON THE PRESIDENT'S ANNOUNCEMENT TODAY DURING A CAMPAIGN STOP IN NEWE HAMPSHIRE.
HE SAYS HE AGREES WITH MARCO RUBIO'S REMARKS... AND THAT THE PRESIDENT'S ORDER WON'T WORK.
I believe the status of young people who come here with no fault of their own is an important matter to be considered and it should be solved on a long term basis, so they'll know what their future will be in this country. I think the the action that the president did today makes it more difficult to reach that long term solution because that executive order is, of course, a short term matter. It can be reversed by subsequent presidents.
AT A REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE IN JANUARY... ROMNEY SAID HE FAVORED A SYSTEM OF "SELF-DEPORTATION"... A POLICY THAT INVOLVES MAKING ECONOMIC CONDITIONS SO DIFFICULT FOR UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS THAT THEY CHOOSE TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY TO FIND BETTER OPPORTUNITIES.

COMMUNITY ACTIVIST ENRIQUE FUENTES JOINS ME NOW TO DISCUSS THE PRESIDENT'S ANNOUNCEMENT.

-First... what do you think about the change?
-Do you think it goes far enough?
-What would you like to see happen next?
-We just heard how Mitt Romney reacted to the change, what's your opinion on his remarks?
-Earlier you said this would benefit the country... can you elaborate on that?
