AUSTIN LEWIS IS AT THE INTERSECTION WITH PAMELA PATTEN... A WARNER ROBINS WOMAN WHO SAYS SHE'S PASSIONATE ABOUT GETTING CROSSING ARMS INSTALLED THERE QUICKLY.

THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SAYS STATE LAW REQUIRES A SET AMOUNT OF TIME TO PLAN AND REVIEW THE WORK.
ACCORDING TO ITS TIME TABLE...G-DOT SENT A PLAN FOR THIS PROJECT TO NORFOLK SOUTHERN ON MONDAY... JUNE 4TH.
IT SAYS G-DOT HAS ALSO SUBMITTED THEIR PLANS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL APPROVAL... WHICH SHOULD COME THIS MONTH.
THEN NORFOLK SOUTHERN MUST REVIEW THOSE PLANS AND GIVE G-DOT A COST ESTIMATE BY SEPTEMBER.
THEN G-DOT WILL HAVE TWO DAYS TO PREPARE AN AGREEMENT
....AND THE RAILROAD HAS FOUR TO EIGHT WEEKS TO SIGN IT.
THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SAYS THEY'LL NEED TWO WEEKS TO APPROVE FUNDING AND EXECUTE THE AGREEMENT.
ONLY THEN CAN THE RAILROAD START WORK.
ALL THAT PUTS THE INSTALLATION INTO NOVEMBER.
NORFOLK SOUTHERN HAS SIX MONTHS TO FINSH THE WORK...WHICH COULD LAST INTO APRIL.
SUSAN TERPAY WITH NORFOLK SOUTHERN SAYS.. THE PROCESS JUST TAKES TIME.
Susan Terpay, Norfolk Southern PR: "I, I, I can't make a best guess. I know that we are going to expedite every part of the process as quickly as possible."

FORMER MACON MAYOR C. JACK ELLIS AND BIBB COUNTY COMMISSIONER ELMO RICHARDSON DISCUSSED THE TOP COP SITUATION DURING THIS WEEK'S CLOSE-UP.
ELLIS OPPOSES CONSOLIDATION.. AND FAVORS AN APPOINTED POLICE CHIEF.
RICHARDSON SUPPORTS CONSOLIDATION.. AND DOESN'T CARE WHO'S TOP COP AS LONG AS THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE AND POLICE DEPARTMENT MERGE SMOOTHLY.
Elmo Richardson, County Commissioner: September the 1st, a transitation team will be formed to deal with these issues. They'll have 16 months in which to work through the details, and I can assure there will be a lot of details. This is one, working through the merger of the police department and the sheriff's office.
Jack Ellis, Former Mayor: It is not good policy. I think it makes for very bad government on the part on the mayor and council of this new government when you have absolutely no say, only recommendations. No say in crime fighting.
