HELLO EVERYONE AND THANKS FOR JOINING US....I'M LEAH JOHNSON..
AND I'M FRANK MALLOY.
THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX...

OUR TOP STORY TONIGHT... SEVERAL FAMILIES LOST THEIR HOMES IN AN APARTMENT FIRE IN EAST MACON THIS MORNING.
BUT FIREFIGHTERS SAY... THAT BLAZE COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED.
JUDY LE TAKES A LOOK.
<<
FOUR APARTMENTS DESTROYED...AND EIGHT OTHERS WITH SMOKE DAMAGE. IT ALL STARTED BECAUSE SOMEONE WAS COOKING HOT DOGS AND EITHER WALKED AWAY OR DOZED OFF. MARQUEZ MIMS ...SAW THE BLAZE ...AND CALLED 9-1-1.

sot marquez mims, witness - when i walked up to it, it was halfway foggy and the fire raised up to the top. the fire was all the way through the apartment.

ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION...LEAVING THE STOVE UNATTENDED IS THE NUMBER REASON FOR HOUSE FIRES.

standup - the fire started here at this stove top. it could've easily been prevented with a device calle stove top fire stop. it's a device a little bigger than a can of tuna. you stick it right above your stove and when the flames reach the bottom of the canister, it will release extinguisher powder to put out the fire.

LARRY SMALLWOOD OF THE MACON -BIBB FIRE DEPARTMENT SAYS PEOPLE MAKE TWO GRAVE MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE...WHEN A FIRE BREAKS OUT IN A POT OR PAN.

sot chief larry smallwood - throwing water on it ...causing it to splash...and picking it up and running with it

AND THATS WHAT HAPPENED AT THIS HOUSE FIRE...

sot mims - i see my nieghbor panicking...he said there was a fire so i went in my house and got a pan. i was thinking it was a small fire but when i went back to get him a pan, he poured the water on the fire, but it was a big fire

THE FIRST REACTION SHOULD ALWAYS BE... TURN IT OFF AND PUT A LID ON IT.
