GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..

HOUSTON COUNTY ADMINISTRATORS SAY THEY STAND BY THEIR SCHOOL SECURITY POLICIES.
SUPERINTENDENT ROBIN HINES SAYS THEY'RE ALWAYS LOOKING TO IMPROVE... BUT IN THE CASE OF 10-YEAR-OLD KIT COLBURN... HE BELIEVES EVERYONE AT RUSSELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ACTED APPROPRIATELY.
COLBURN WALKED OUT OF SCHOOL TUESDAY... AND WAS FOUND YESTERDAY MORNING IN SOME BUSHES A COUPLE OF BLOCKS AWAY.
Robin Hines, Houston Superintendent: (55:40) "As a result of this situation, that doesn't cause us to go into reactive mode at all. This is an on-going process that we do. As evidenced by our dedication of funds through the SPLOST to increase security, secured vestibules, that sort of thing. Most of the time, you're worried about trying to keep the outside from coming in, of course doors are locked and we have a process for getting in, that sort of thing- you don't lock 'em from the inside. People can leave. (cover-56:26) "I want to stress that the people at this school all the teachers did a wonderful job in this and will continue to do a wonderful job. Just like in all that we do, we want to get better."
RUSSELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL KEITH LAURITSON SAYS... THE SCHOOL WAS ON A SPECIAL SCHEDULE FOR TESTING TUESDAY.
HE SAYS UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES... COLBURN'S TEACHER WOULD HAVE NOTICED HIM MISSING RIGHT AWAY.
BUT BECAUSE OF THE CHANGE... COLBURN DIDN'T RETURN TO HER CLASS FOR SEVERAL HOURS.
LAURITSON SAYS THAT'S HOW THE STUDENT'S ABSENCE WENT UNNOTICED FROM 8-45 UNTIL NOON... WHEN HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE BACK IN THE CLASSROOM.
Keith Lauritsen: (52:25) "I can't say that there's anything we could do to prevent that from happening. I know the teachers, they care very much about their kids. They want to make sure they know where they are at all times. They do. In the teacher's mind, he was either here in the office or in the other teacher's classroom. She never thought anything different. (52:45) "To a certain extent, were going to have to trust the kids, especially the older ones, that they're going to make the right choice. With the younger kids, there's much more supervision as far as going place to place."
LAURITSEN SAID KIT COLBURN WAS NOT AT SCHOOL TODAY.
HE SAID HE AND OTHER ADIMNISTRATORS ARE DISCUSSING DISCIPLINARY ACTION... BUT HAVE NOT MADE A DECISION YET ON WHAT THAT WILL BE.
A FEW OF YOU TOLD US YOU WERE CONCERNED ABOUT RUSSELL ELEMENTARY'S SECURITY AFTER KIT COLBURN WALKED OUT.
WE WENT TO THE SCHOOL THIS MORNING... TO ASK PARENTS HOW THEY FELT.
MOST OF THE PEOPLE WE SPOKE WITH SAID THEY WEREN'T CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY... BECAUSE THEY TRUST THE SCHOOL AND ITS STAFF.
Elizabeth Edelman, Warner Robins: A little bit but not really, I trust Russell Elementary staff, I know they are very concerned about the children. They now say they're going to buddy up students if they have to go to the bathroom or to the office or whatever. I, I trust Russell Elementary, I'm, I think highly of the school.
Violet Hilton, Warner Robins: Walking off campus is not a great idea and I hope this doesn't set a bad precedent for other kids that are having trouble at school or big imaginations, whatever may have been to make Kit walk off campus.
AND ALL OF THE PARENTS WE SPOKE WITH TOLD US THEY'RE RELIEVED THAT KIT WAS FOUND SAFELY AND IS BACK HOME.
