MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT'S PROPOSED 2013 BUDGET INCLUDES SPENDING CUTS... AND A TAX BREAK FOR HOMEOWNERS.
THAT'S ACCORDING TO BUDGET DOCUMENTS HE'S PRESENTING TO THE MACON CITY COUNCIL.
It is first and foremost, and obviously as required a balanced budget and it reflects our improving financial stability, but it is still a conservative budget. We are not out of these tough economic times, Nevertheless, this budget provides an equity adjustment for general employees, similar to the one done for police and fire in the second half of 2011. It also gives a modest reduction in the millage rate for our taxpayers and it has no increase in fees.
THE DOCUMENTS SHOW REICHERT IS ASKING COUNCIL TO REDUCE SPENDING FROM THE CITY'S GENERAL FUND....
FROM 74 MILLION DOLLARS TO 70 MILLION.
THAT'S A CUT OF MORE THAN 5 AND A HALF PERCENT.
IT'S PARTLY DUE TO FIVE DEPARTMENTS MOVING TO THE BIBB COUNTY BUDGET STARTING JULY FIRST.
REICHERT IS ALSO ASKING FOR A CUT IN THE MILLAGE RATE... OF A TENTH OF A POINT.
THAT WOULD SAVE THE AVERAGE HOMEOWNER... 4 DOLLARS.

Rocco Landesman, NEA Chairman: 03:43 I've been hearing for years about the arts scene in Macon, the music activity, the art activity, that's everywhere, the beautiful architecture that's here, you know you get knocked out by that as soon as you come in.
LANDESMAN SAYS HE HOPES THE N-E-A WILL CONTINUE TO SHOW WHY FUNDING THE ARTS IS IMPORTANT TO A COMMUNITY.
Rocco Landesman, NEA Chairman: 05:16 It's always in jeopardy. Um, it's always a target and um sometimes I wonder why is it such a target because the public funding is so small, it's so miniscule, but I come to realize it has a high symbolic value, so I think it's kind of a ready and easy thing to attack people want to associate with pursuits that are elitist and our point is art is not something that happens at opera houses in New York and Los Angeles, that it's all across the country
LANDESMAN VISITED THE TUBMAN AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM....TO TALK ABOUT THE MUSEUM INCORPORATES THE ARTS IN TEACHING HISTORY.
