HELLO EVERYONE AND THANKS FOR JOINING US....I'M LEAH JOHNSON..
AND I'M FRANK MALLOY.
THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX...
TONIGHT'S TOP STORY... MACON HAS THREE MAIN YOUTH GANGS...AND MORE THAN 400 SUB-GANGS.
POLICE SAY MORE YOUNG GIRLS ARE INVOLVED NOWADAYS.
AND THEY SAY FACEBOOK...HELPS
THAT'S JUST PART OF A MACON POLICE PRESENTATION TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS.... ON THE STATE OF THE CITY'S GANG PROBLEM.
MAJOR CHARLES STONE JUST TOLD THE COUNCIL MEMBERS THAT MACON P-D HAS DOUBLED ITS ANTI-GANG TASK FORCE IN THE PAST YEAR.
ANOTHER PART OF THAT DISCUSSION... HOW PARENTS... TEACHERS AND OTHERS CAN RECOGNIZE TEENS WHO COULD BE INVOLVED IN GANG ACTIVITY.
lucas: how often do your officers get, and the task force, do they get training as far as what's a gang member and who's not a gang member so that we don't have profiling because someone has a certain color or somebody is standing with someone? Do they get regular updates on the law?
officer: we have regular training. Also it's in our policy book and we go over our policy book and we adhere to our policy book. And for profiling, it's something that we don't do and it's in the policy that we have to adhere to. And any violation of that would be followed-through with an internal affairs investigation. So, yes ma'am.
lucas: Cuz I know that there's a tendancy lots of times to say 'oh, somebody's in a gang because you see two folks with the same color' and people are really not aware of gang activity. they need to know the fundamentals and parents need to know some things so that they can recognize little things that may be going on in their household that they're not thinking anything about, thinking that it's just something cute. And the ones that think their kids are miss goodie two shoes or mister goodie two shoes, you know, they just get a rude awakening when they realize, and they're living in North Macon and they realize that, you know, here's a gang member living in their home as well. so, I think you can debunk some of those stereotypes too of the young black male gang member, which is a stereotype.
THE COUNCIL PUBLIC SAFETY COMITTEE IS EXPECTED TO TAKE UP SEVERAL PROPOSALS FROM THE MAYOR...AIMED AT STOPPING TEEN VIOLENCE.
THEY INCLUDE A PLAN FOR THE CITY TO SPONSOR TWO YOUTH BOXING TOURNAMENTS.... UNDER THE NAME "GLOVES NOT GUNS."
AMY AUBERT IS AT THAT MEETING RIGHT NOW...AND WILL HAVE MORE ON EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11

(ROB-REE-ON) ROBREON LEE.. JUST 16 YEARS OLD.. WAS CHARGED WITH FOUNTAIN'S DEATH.
POLICE CALLED THE SHOOTINGS GANG-RELATED..
IT WAS THEN THAT MACON MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT ANNOUNCED HE HAD A PLAN TO CURB YOUTH VIOLENCE..
THE PLAN INCLUDES INCREASING POLICE PATROLS.. CREATING A YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL.. CHURCH OUTREACH AND JOB TRAINING..
AT AN EMOTIONAL CITY HALL MEETING...SOME PEOPLE SAID...EVERYBODY NEEDS TO PLAY A PART IN THE SOLUTION..
>>We as a community got to stand up and get our house in order. I'm responsible for my children. How many caskets got to roll? How many?!?<<
THEN JUST TWO WEEKS LATER.. 3 SEPARATE SHOOTINGS ON THE SAME NIGHT..
A MAN WAS SHOT ON VINE STREET AROUND MIDNIGHT..
THEN SIX PEOPLE WERE SHOT IN A DRIVE-BY AT A PARTY ON BERKNER AVENUE ABOUT 2 HOURS LATER..
POLICE SAID THE "PARTY" WAS ACTUALLY A CELEBRATION OF THE FOUNDING OF THE CRIPS GANG.
