IT'S NOW GOING TO BE EASIER FOR MILITARY FAMILIES MOVING TO GEORGIA... OR OTHER STATES... TO GET THEIR CHILDREN SETTLED IN TO SCHOOL.
TWO WEEKS AGO... GOVERNOR NATHAN DEAL SIGNED AN INTERSTATE COMPACT THAT MAKES IT EASIER FOR MILITARY CHILDREN TO SWITCH SCHOOLS WHEN THEIR FAMILY IS RE-ASSIGNED TO A DIFFERENT STATE
CANDACE ADORKA SPOKE TO ONE WARNER ROBINS MILITARY FAMILY ABOUT HOW THE COMPACT COULD HELP THEM.
<<
THE BUTIKOFER FAMILY HAS MOVED ABOUT A DOZEN TIMES THROUGH THE MILITARY...
"We've been in Southern Virginia, Texas, Oklahoma..."
THE MOM... LESLIE SAYS EACH TIME... HER THREE DAUGHERS HAVE TO ADJUST.
"I get to see new things get to go to new places and then my least favorite part about moving is going to new schools and meeting new friends and leaving my old friends behind."
SOPHOMORES ABBY BUTIKOFER AND HER TWIN ERIN SAY THEIR LATEST MOVE AFFECTED THEIR GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS.
"So in Illinois freshmen took world cultures and sophomores took civics and we move here and it turns out that freshmen take civics here... and sophomores take world history, so we like, missed out on the civics requirement."
THE INTERSTATE COMPACT ALLOWS THE STUDENTS' NEW SCHOOL TO ACCEPT GRADUATION AND ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS FROM THEIR OLD SCHOOL.
"It's headache enough to move and when that stress is relieved and you have finally figured all of that out, it's a whole lot easier."
LESLEY DARLEY IS THE SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICER FOR ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE.
SHE SAYS THE COMPACT HAS A WIDE-RANGING IMPACT FOR THE 42-THOUSAND SCHOOL-AGED KIDS IN GERGIA'S MILITARY FAMILIES...
"Definitely sends the message that Georgia is a very military-friendly state and that they wanna make the accomodations necessary to assist military families. They already sacrifice so much with deployments, relocations, TDY's, that their child's education should not be one of those sacrifices."
LESLIE BUTIKOFER SAYS THE INTERSTATE COMPACT IS AN ESSENTIAL TOOL ...
"So i'm hopeful. I'm hopeful that the next place I go, that my girls will be able to say hey I already tested you should be able to place them"
... SO THAT MAYBE THE NEXT MOVE CAN START ON A SMOOTHER NOTE.
CANDACE ADORKA 13WMAZ EYEWITNESS NEWS.

LESLIE DARLEY SAYS THE COMPACT WON'T BE IMPLEMENTED FOR A WHILE... THE STATE STILL HAS TO ASSEMBLE A TEAM OF OFFICIALS TO WORK OUT THE DETAILS... INCLUDING A COMPACT COMMISSIONER.
