HELLO EVERYONE AND THANKS FOR JOINING US.... I'M LEAH JOHNSON..
AND I'M LORRA LYNCH JONES
FRANK MALLOY HAS THE NIGHT OFF.

OUR TOP STORY TONIGHT... IF VOTERS DECIDED IN JULY TO CONSOLIDATE MACON AND BIBB COUNTY... THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE COULD JUMP FROM ABOUT 400 EMPLOYEES TO NEARLY DOUBLE THAT... ACCORDING TO BIBB COUNTY SHERIFF JERRY MODENA.
HE SAYS THEY HOPE TO MOVE OVER AS MANY MACON POLICE OFFICERS AS POSSIBLE.. IF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT CONSOLIDATES.
BRITTINY BARBER HAS MORE.
<<
THE CONSOLIDATION LEGISLATION THAT'S HEADED FOR A VOTE IN JULY... CALLS FOR NOT ONLY COMBINING CITY AND COUNTY GOVERNMENTS.. BUT ALSO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT.
Staton: "It's obviously one of the most signifcant issues in a consolidation plan.. who is going to be responsible for law enforcement."
STATE SENATOR CECIL STATON SAYS THE DELEGATION DECIDED ON THE ELECTED SHERIFF AS THE TOP COP... FOR SEVERAL REASONS.
Staton: "We feel like it's cost effective and it's probably what the people really want to be able to be a part of that decision of whos going to be the Chief law enforcement officer for the consolidated government."
Modena: "That's what consolidation is about trying to save money and you know the bringing together of the officers, some of them will retire, but the positions will remain the same."
MODENA SAYS THEY HOPE TO TRANSITION MOST MACON POLICE OFFICERS OVER.. IF CONSOLIDATION PASSES.
Modena: "We're going to need the city patrol. We're going to need the city detectives . Because again, we're going from, the city's going from 57 square miles to the whole 254 square miles that bibb county occupies."
FOR STATON... THE PLAN TO MERGE LAW ENFORCEMENT SHOWS ONE WAY HE SAYS THEY PLANNED TO CUT COSTS.
sTATON:l "iF WE'RE NOT SAVING MONEY By putting these governments together then there's no reason to do it."
NO MATTER THE BADGE OR CAR... THEY REPRESENT THE SAME CAUSE... TO SERVE AND PROTECT... WHETHER CONSOLIDATION BECOMES A REALITY OR NOT...
We'll merge and I think that merger will be a good merger.
