AN AVALANCHE IN WASHINGTON STATE KILLED THREE PEOPLE AT A POPULAR SKI AREA.
AND AS DANIELLE NOTTINGHAM REPORTS THERE'S CONCERN OF ADDITIONAL SLIDES.
<<

PKG:

((NARR-1))

IT LOOKS LIKE A WINTER WONDERLAND, BUT THIS PICTURESQUE MOUNTAIN IN WASHINGTON STATE WAS THE SCENE OF A DEADLY AVALANCHE.

THE KING COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE GOT WORD OF THE SLIDE JUST AFTER NOON SUNDAY. IT HAPPENED NEAR THE STEVENS PASS SKI AREA.

((sot)) Sgt. Katie Larson/King County Sheriff's Office

"Four of the skiers were basically shot down a chute of about 15-hundred feet. Three of those skiers were buried under the snow."

((NARR-2))

ONE WOMAN WHO SURVIVED THE SLIDE WAS USING AN AVALANCHE RESCUE SYSTEM -- SIMILAR TO AN AIRBAG -- LIKE THE ONE SEEN IN THIS VIDEO.

((sot)) Deputy Chris Bedker, King County Sherriff's Office

It kept her atop of the avalanche and basically saved her life.

((NARR-3))

AUTHORITIES SAY SEVERAL GROUPS WERE SKIING IN AN OUT-OF-BOUNDS AREA ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. MOST WERE ABLE TO FREE THEMSELVES FROM THE SNOW.

THE AREA HAD RECEIVED 21 INCHES OF SNOWFALL THE NIGHT BEFORE.

((sot)) Sgt. Katie Larson/King County Sheriff's Office

You're skiing at your own risk, but i've been told they were all very experienced skiers. They knew what they were doing, the choices they were making.

((NARR-4))

THE STAFF AT STEVENS PASS SAYS NEWS OF THE FATALITIES HIT HARD.

((sot)) John Gifford/General Manager , Stevens Pass

Even though it's outside the ski area boundary it's very hard on the community here.

((NARR-5))

EXPERTS SAY THERE COULD STILL BE A HIGH RISK FOR ADDITIONAL SLIDES THIS SEASON.... PARTIALLY BECAUSE OF A WEAK BASE LAYER OF SNOW FROM A DRY WINTER.
>>
AS OF LAST WEEK... THERE HAD BEEN 13 AVALANCHE DEATHS ACROSS THE WEST THIS SEASON.
