SINGER WHITNEY HOUSTON HAS DIED A LOS ANGELES HOTEL ON THE EVE OF MUSIC'S BIGGEST NIGHT.
HER METEORIC RISE IN THE WORLD OF POP MUSIC WAS COUNTERED BY HER ONGOING BATTLE WITH DRUGS.

WHITNEY HOUSTON WAS AMERICA'S SWEETHEART... RISING TO POP STARDOM IN THE 1980'S, AND INSPIRING A GENERATION OF YOUNGER SINGERS.

HER LIFE CAME TO AN ABRUPT END HERE.... AT THE BEVERLY HILTON HOTEL. SHE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD IN HER ROOM ON THE FOURTH FLOOR.

 

HOUSTON WAS SCHEDULED TO APPEAR AT A PRE-GRAMMY PARTY HERE AT THE HOTEL. IT'S HOSTED BY CLIVE DAVIS -- THE MUSIC PRODUCER WHO DISCOVERED HER.

THE DAUGHTER OF GOSPEL SINGER CISSY HOUSTON, WHITNEY FIRST STARTED SINGING IN CHURCH.... LATER DOING BACKUP VOCALS FOR ARTISTS LIKE CHAKA KHAN AND JERMAINE JACKSON.

HER 1985 SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM WAS A HIT FACTORY AND SOLD MILLIONS. THE SONG "SAVING ALL MY LOVE FOR YOU" GOT HOUSTON HER FIRST GRAMMY FOR BEST FEMALE POP VOCAL.

SHE WENT ON TO BECOME ONE OF THE TOP-SEELING ARTISTS IN POP MUSIC HISTORY - WITH MORE THAN 55 MILLION RECORDS SOLD IN THE U-S ALONE.

HOUSTON ALSO HAD AN ONGOING BATTLE WITH DRUGS.

SHE ADMITTED TO ABUSING COCAINE AND PILLS. HER VOICE SHOWED THE TROUBLE... TURNING RASPY AND LOW.

And that's why we've been working together ever since.

SHE WAS 48 YEARS OLD.

HE DIED IN A PLANE CRASH IN FLORIDA LAST MONTH.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF THE LATE ALLEN GOLSON CAME TOGETHER FOR HIS MEMORIAL AT CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN MACON.
ACCORDING TO MARION COUNTY AND THE FLORIDA SHERIFF'S OFFICE... GOLSON DIED OF THERMAL BURNS AND SMOKE INHALATION.
GOLSON SERVED AS HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR OF COLISEUM HEALTH SYSTEMS FOR 30 YEARS.
DOUG BREWER WORKED WITH GOLSEN AND SAYS HE WAS A GREAT PERSON AND HE WILL BE MISSED.

HIS WIFE CAROL WAS ABOARD THE PLANE AND SUFFERED NON LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES.

THE CITY OF MACON CELEBRATED THE COMPLETION OF SOUTH MACON'S FIVE BY FIVE PROGRAM BY HOLDING A COMMUNITY DAY AT HERITAGE AT HOUSTON CHURCH.

CITY WORKERS SPENT FIVE WEEKS... SPRUCING UP FIVE BLOCKS IN SOUTH MACON... PICKING UP TRASH... PAINTING CURBS... AND CUTTING GRASS.
WE TALKED TO FOLKS IN THIS SOUTH MACON NEIGHBORHOOD ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND IF THEY NOTICED A CHANGE.
SOME FOLKS SAY IT HAS HELPED A LOT...AND OTHERS SAY WHILE THERE HAVE BEEN IMPROVEMENT....MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE TO CHANGE THE NEIGHBORHOOD.
