HELLO EVERYONE AND THANKS FOR JOINING US.... I'M LEAH JOHNSON..
AND I'M FRANK MALLOY.
THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX...

OUR TOP STORY TONIGHT... PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA WILL TAKE THE STAGE IN ABOUT THREE HOURS TO DELIVER HIS STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS.
THE PRESIDENT IS EXPECTED TO PRESENT NEW IDEAS TO TRY TO JUMPSTART THE ECONOMY.
THOSE INCLUDE INVESTING IN MANUFACTURING...
PLANS TO HELP THE SUFFERING HOUSING MARKET...
AND CHANGES TO THE NATION'S TAX CODES.

REPUBLICAN JADE MOREY WITH GO-VOTE DOT COM AND DEMOCRATIC MERCER UNIVERSITY POLITICAL SCIENCE MAJOR SEAN KENNEDY JOIN LORRA LYNCH JONES.. TO TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE EXPECTED POINTS IN THE SPEECH.
THEY'RE HERE TO SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS ON WHERE THE COUNTRY STANDS HEADING INTO TONIGHT'S ADDRESS.

-As you just heard, a big part of the president's speech involves the economy. Central theme will be fairness; that America is no longer built on theme that if you work hard, you can make it. Will that resonate with people your age?
- "Economic inequality"; a fair shake

- Do you think president obama has the right priorities to move the country forward? (middle class values-- tax reform, clean energy, education and job training)

-What do you think of the state of the union in general? Are we heading in the right direction?

- America "built to last" is the theme

- Mrs. Obama's guests, Warren Buffet's secretary (illustrating that she pays a lower tax rate than Buffett, and Steve jobs's widow, Mark Kelly)

- What would you like to hear?

- What do you expect to hear in republican rebuttal?
YOU CAN WATCH THE STATE OF THE UNION TONIGHT AT 9 P.M. RIGHT HERE ON 13WMAZ.... AND WE'LL HAVE FULL COVERAGE TONIGHT ON EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

THE SCHOOL BOARD VOTED TO CONTINUE THE FOUR DAY WEEK LAST MARCH.
PEACH COUNTY BOARD CHAIRMAN JAMIE JOHNSON SAYS THE SCHOOL BOARD STARTED TALKING IN DECEMBER AT A BOARD RETREAT ABOUT GOING BACK TO A FIVE DAY WEEK.
JOHNSON TELLS US THEY WEREN'T SAVING AS MUCH AS THEY EXPECTED BY GOING TO THE FOUR-DAY WEEK.
Jamie Johnson, Board Chairman: We're not really seeing a true savings. Um, it was not really comparable to the number of days that was told to us, stating that we were saving so much money.
JOHNSON SAYS THE BOARD IS HOPING TO DECIDE BY MARCH.
HE SAYS THEY DON'T WANT TO MAKE THIS CHANGE HASTILY.
THEY WANT TO GIVE THE COMMUNITY TIME TO PREPARE -- IF THEY DECIDE TO GO BACK TO A FIVE DAY SCHOOL WEEK.

MILLIONS OF PARTICLES HIT THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE THIS MORNING AFTER WHAT SCIENTISTS CALL AN UNUSUAL TYPE OF SOLAR FLARE.
KATELYN HECK SPOKE WITH EXPERTS WHO SAY GEORGIA IS TOO FAR SOUTH TO SEE ANY OF THE STORM'S AFTERMATH.
<<
(solar flare vid)
AS IMPRESSIVE AS IT MAY LOOK... SCIENTISTS SAY THIS SOLAR FLARE WAS ONLY MODERATE.
BUT SOME EXPERTS LIKE RODNEY VIERECK SAY IT WAS THE FLARES *AFTERMATH* THAT WAS STRONGER THAN USUAL.

(SOT: viereck, NOAA: this flare was a large flare but not as big as the ones we sometimes get, but it simply produced a lot of particles. It was in the right location on the sun so that the particles came most directly towards earth.)

SOLAR STORMS OCCUR IN THREE STAGES.... THE FLARE... THE SOLAR STORM... AND THE GEOMAGNETIC STORM.
(CG) SCIENTISTS AT THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION RANK THESE STAGES ON A SCALE OF ONE TO FIVE...WHICH IS THE STRONGEST.
THIS SOLAR FLARE WAS RATED AS AN CLASS 2... WITH A SOLAR STORM RANKED 3 OUT OF 5. THE GEOMAGNETIC STORM THAT HIT EARLY TUESDAY MORNING WAS ALSO RATED AS A CLASS 2.

DURING THE GEOMAGNETIC STORM... PARTICLES FROM THE SUN... CALLED CORONAL MASS EJECTIONS... OR C-M-E....RACE TOWARD THE EARTHS ATMOSPHERE.... AT SPEEDS UP TO THREE MILLION MILES PER HOUR.

(SOT: greenhouse, demonstration: it can actually disrupt the earth's magnetic field and thats what you're seeing here. Those lines represent the magnetic lines of the earth, and when the CME impacts those, it can actually increase the amount of radiation that we see here on earth very slightly.)

VIERECK SAYS THE EARTHS ATMOSPHERE ABSORBS MOST OF THE PARTICLES SO YOU WILL SEE LESS RADIATION THAN FROM A MEDICAL SCAN.

HE SAYS STORMS THIS SIZE COULD INTERFERE WITH SATELLITES AND SOME RADIO SYSTEMS ALL WEEK... BUT THE ONLY LIKELY EFFECT WILL BE BRIGHT COLORFUL LIGHTS IN NORTHERN AREAS... LIKE CANADA AND ALASKA.

THIS IS WHERE THE ERDRICH UMFORMTECHNIK PLANT WILL BE LOCATED A HUNDRED AND THIRTY SQUARE FOOT BUILDING ON FORTY ACRES RIGHT ACROSS FROM I-16.
CAL RAY PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY SAYS THIS IS A BIG WIN FOR LAURENS COUNTY.

"It's a private company, father and son, great to work with. They have 1350 employees worldwide. They've made multiple visits here they will be relocating people here. With the losses that have taken place in this region over the last ten years the work we've put in over the last five years, I think city county development authority and most citizens here are going to be excited."

THE PLANT WILL MAKE BRAK PISTONS AND OTHER METAL STAMPING.
RAY SAYS THEY'LL EMPLOY A HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-EIGHT PEOPLE AND PAY THEM BETWEEN TEN AND FOURTEEN DOLLARS AND HOUR.
HE SAYS GETTING ERDRICH UMFORMTECHNIK TO LOCATE HERE WAS A YEAR LONG PROCESS.

"They wanted a perfect site based on acreage, soil composition, utilities, highway access we had a great site direct flight from atlanta to stockhart, because their headquarters is forty-five minutes from stockhart germany. Access to the port to bring products in and out and really uniform distance from their customers volkswagon, bmw, and mercedes benz."

RAY SAYS THE COMPANY SHOULD BREAK GROUND IN MAY OR JUNE AND SPEND THIRTY NINE MILLION DOLLARS ON THE FACILITY. HE SAYS THEY SHOULD WRAP UP CONSTRUCTION IN MARCH NEXT YEAR.
