HELLO EVERYONE AND THANKS FOR JOINING US. I'M LORRA LYNCH JONES.
AND I'M FRANK MALLOY..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX.
LEAH JOHNSON HAS THE NIGHT OFF.

WE BEGIN TONIGHT WITH BREAKING NEWS OUT OF MACON.
BIBB COUNY CORONER LEON JONES SAYS ROBERT BROWN IS DEAD.

BROWN WAS FIRST ELECTED TO THE STATE SENATE'S 26TH DISTRICT IN 1991... DURING A SPECIAL ELECTION TO FILL AN UNEXPIRED TERM.
HE RESIGNED FROM THE GEORGIA SENATE IN JUNE... TO RUN FOR MAYOR OF MACON.
HE WAS DEFEATED IN THE JULY PRIMARY.
DURING HIS TIME IN THE SENATE... BROWN SERVED ON THE ADMINISTRATIVE AFFAIRS... ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT... AND INSURANCE AND LABOR COMMITTEES... AS WELL AS THE SENATE STUDY COMMITTEE ON CHILDREN AT RISK... THE TASK FORCE ON VIOLENCE IN THE MEDIA...
WE ARE SENDING A REPORTER TO THE SCENE... TO GET MORE INFORMATION... AND WE HOPE TO BRING YOU A LIVE REPORT LATER IN THIS NEWSCAST.

WE SPOKE TO FORMER MAYOR C- JACK ELLIS ABOUT WHAT HE HOPES BIBB COUNTY.. AND CENTRAL GEORGIA.. WILL REMEMBER AS BROWN'S LEGACY.

FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE... DUBOSE PORTER IS JOINING US BY PHONE NOW... WITH REACTION TO BROWN'S DEATH.

A NEW POLL OF VOTERS IN GEORGIA SAYS THE MARCH SIXTH REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY IS LOOKING LIKE A LANDSLIDE.
WAY OUT IN THE LEAD IS FORMER HOUSE SPEAKER AND GEORGIA CONGRESSMAN NEWT GINGRICH.
ELEANOR LISSTIZYN BREAKS DOWN THE NUMBERS.
SURVEY USA CONTACTED THREE HUNDRED AND SIXTY TWO GEORGIANS WHO ARE LIKELY TO VOTE IN THE MARCH SIXTH REPUBLICAN PRIMARY.

THEY FOUND SIXTY-FIVE PERCENT SUPPORT NEWT GINGRICH... GIVING HIM A FIFTY THREE POINT LEAD OVER THE NEXT IN LINE-- MITT ROMNEY.
ACCORDING TO THE POLL... JUST TWELVE PERCENT OF POTENTIAL VOTERS FAVORED THE FORMER MASSACHUSETS GOVERNOR.

ALL THE OTHER CADNDIATES ONLY HIT IN THE SINGLE DIGITS.
MICHELLE BACHMAN AND RON PAUL EACH RECIEVED 5 PERCENT, TEXAS GOVERNOR RON PERRY GOT FOUR PERCENT.
JOHN HUNTSMAN AND RICK SANTORUM EACH POLLED AT ONE PERCENT.

ABOUT EIGHT PERCENT REPLIED THEY ARE EITHER UNDECIDED OR FAVOR SOME OTHER CANDIDATE.

ANOTHER INTERESTING NOTE-- THE POLL SHOWED IF GINGRICH AND ROMNEY WENT HEAD TO HEAD FOR THE NOMINATION IN THE UPCOMING PRIMARY... GINGRICH WOULD WIN SEVENTY THREE TO EIGHTEEN PERCENT.

THE MARGIN OF ERROR ON THE REPUBLICAN FIELD....2 POINT NINE PERCENT.

BUT THE POLL ALSO SHOWS... BOTH CANDIDATES WOULD BEAT BARACK OBAMA IN THE STATE OF GEORGIA...IF THE ELECTION WAS HELD TODAY.

THAT WAS BASED ON ANSWERS FROM MORE THAN 11 HUNDRED REGISTERED GEORGIA VOTERS.
THAT MARGIN OF ERROR ON THOSE QUESTIONS....5 PERCENT.

FRANK? LEAH?

BIBB COUNTY'S DISTRICT ATTORNEY SAYS HE'S SEEKING THE DEATH PENALTY AGAINST STEPHEN MCDANIEL... THE ACCUSED KILLER OF LAUREN GIDDINGS.
GREG WINTERS MADE THAT ANNOUNCEMENT THIS MORNING.
WINTERS SAYS HE'S FILED A MOTION REQUESTING THE DEATH PENALTY...ON THE GROUNDS THAT GIDDINGS KILLING WAS QUOTE... OUTRAGEOUSLY OR WANTONLY VILE... HORRIBLE OR INHUMANE.
THAT'S ONE OF THE STANDARDS THAT ALLOWS PROSECUTORS TO ASK FOR CAPITAL PUNISHMENT.
GIDDINGS DISMEMBERED BODY WAS FOUND OUTSIDE HER GEORGIA AVENUE APARTMENT IN JUNE.
LAST MONTH...A GRAND JURY INDICTED MCDANIEL...HER NEIGHBOR AND FELLOW MERCER LAW STUDENT...IN HER KILLING.
WINTERS WOULDN'T COMMENT FURTHER.
BALDWIN COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY FRED BRIGHT SAYS HE HAS PROSECUTED THIRTEEN DEATH PENALTY CASES IN SEVENTEEN YEARS.
BRIGHT SAYS THE NEED TO GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME MEANS DEATH PENALTY CASES CAN BE LENGTHY.
WHEN ASKING A JURY TO CONSIDER THE DEATH PENALTY... HE SAYS HE WEIGHS THE CIRCUMSTANCES ... AND CONSIDERS WHETHER THE ACCUSED SHOWS REMORSE...
BRIGHT SAYS ASKING THE STATE TO TAKE A LIFE IS A WEIGHTY DECISION.... AND SOME ARE MORE DIFFICULT THAN OTHERS.
"Some of them were quite easy to be honest with you, it just jumped out at you. The whole community what was done, some of those I knew right away and some of those were very easy to be candid with you. Some cases you do wrassel with, it's hard to generalize, every case is different. Is it difficult? The bottom line at least for me, I never ask a jury to do something, to render a verdict or impose a punsihment that I could not do, or would not do myself."
WE CONTACTED GIDDINGS' SISTER KAITLYN WHEELER BY EMAIL THIS AFTERNOON.
SHE SAYS THEY SUPPORT DISTRICT ATTORNEY WINTERS' DECISION TO ASK FOR THE DEATH PENALTY.

THE COMMANDER OF THE WARNER ROBINS AIR LOGISTICS CENTER SAYS HE EXPECTS TO KNOW ABOUT MORE CUTS COMING TO ROBINS IN THE NEXT TWO MONTHS.
MAJOR GENERAL ROBERT MCMAHON SAID THAT WHILE SPEAKING TO THE MACON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AT THE DOUGLAS THEATER.
MCMAHON SAID 45-HUNDRED MORE JOB CUTS ARE COMING TO THE AIR FORCE.
HE SAYS SOME OF THOSE... ALTHOUGH HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW MANY.. WILL AFFECT ROBINS.
THAT'S IN ADDITION TO THE 515 POSITIONS ROBINS ANNOUNCED THEY WOULD SLASH IN NOVEMBER... AS PART OF A DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE EFFORT TO CUT 450 BILLION IN SPENDING.
MCMAHON SAYS ABOUT 235 PEOPLE HAVE ACCEPTED THE EARLY RETIREMENT OR SEPARATION OFFERS SO FAR... BUT THAT DOESN'T RULE OUT FORCED LAY-OFFS DOWN THE ROAD.
Maj. Gen. Robert McMahon: (19:50) "I'm not at a point right now that I can say that, because I don't know what the additional cuts we will have to absorb will be yet. That will drive it, but I think there's adequate interest around the base and throughout the folks that work there, that as we go through the next round of reductions, that hopefully we will be able to use voluntary tools."
McMAHON SAID RECENT AGGRESSIVE EFFORTS BY BIBB AND HOUSTON COUNTY TO SOLVE THE ENCROACHMENT ISSUE... WILL PUT ROBINS ON A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD WITH THE COUNTRY'S TWO OTHER AIR LOGISTICS CENTERS.
BOTH COUNTIES DESIGNATED MONEY FROM FUTURE SPLOST COLLECTIONS TO PURCHASE THE LAND AT THE END OF THE BASE.
BIBB VOTERS AGREED TO THE PLAN IN NOVEMBER.
HOUSTON VOTERS WILL GET THEIR CHANGE IN MARCH.

WE CONTINUE OUR 13 DAYS OF GIVING TONIGHT WITH A GROUP THAT WORKS TO HELP ABUSED WOMEN AND THEIR CHILDREN.
CRISIS LINE AND SAFE HOUSE OFFERS SHELTER... COUNSELING AND SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES YEAR ROUND BUT THEY NEED YOUR HELP TO DO A LITTLE MORE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.
LEAH JOHNSON HAS MORE.
sot: If we did not exist, there would be nothing available for victims to turn to, to point them to other resources in the community or anywhere for them to go on an emergency basis. To have somewhere to flee the violence at a time when their abuser might be looking for them.

DEE SIMMS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF CRISIS LINE AND SAFE HOUSE IS PASSIONATE ABOUT PROTECTING WOMEN AND CHILDREN. SHE WORKS WITH A TEAM TO HELP VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT. THEY HAVE A 24 CRISIS HOTLINE AND A SHELTER THAT HOUSES FAMILIES IN NEED OF A SAFE HAVEN. SHE SAYS IT'S A PLACE WHERE WOMEN CAN GET BACK ON THEIR FEET AND PROVIDE FOR THEIR CHILDREN FOLLOWING AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP.

SOT: We work with them to help them become self sufficiant and help them move out of the shelter and move on to a successful life a life free of violence.

THE HOLIDAY SEASON SHE SAYS CAN BE DIFFICULT... ESPECIALLY FOR CHILDREN. SHE'S HOPING THE COMMUNITY WILL REACH OUT AND HELP PROVIDE A CHRISTMAS FOR THE FAMILIES THAT CALL THIS HIDDEN SHELTER IN CENTRAL GEORGIA HOME...

SOT: We have 15 families that we are working with and 22 children right now that we are trying to collect Christmas presents for so that they can have the same things that we want for all of our families.
