WE'RE TAKING A LOOK AT 13 CHARITIES THAT HELP FAMILIES IN CENTRAL GEORGIA WHO COULD USE A HAND.
AND WE'RE INVITING YOU TO BECOME PART OF THE HERO ARMY AND EXTEND YOUR HELP.
WE START THINGS OFF WITH MACON'S PROJECT GIVING... WHICH HELPS FAMILIES WHO HAVE A CHILD WITH MEDICAL PROBLEMS.
AND AS ONE FAMILY TOLD AUSTIN LEWIS... THE PROJECT GAVE THEM SOMETHING TO DEPEND ON... WHEN THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENED.
<<Amy Floyd, Warner Robins: On July 19th, Aden had been to camp that morning, gotten something to eat, got a haircut. The boys came home and they were just sitting on the sofa and he said my head hurts.
Amy Floyd, Warner Robins: within about 30 seconds he grabbed his head and started screaming.
THAT MOMENT CHANGED THE LIVES OF THE FLOYD FAMILY FOREVER -- THAT'S WHEN A GROUP OF BLOOD VESSELS BURST IN 8-YEAR-OLD ADEN'S BRAIN. IT'S CALLED AN ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATION... OR A-V-M.
ADEN WAS AIRLIFTED TO A HOSPITAL FOR EMERGENCY SURGERY.
Amy Floyd, Warner Robins: the doctors told us that night that he probably wouldn't make it through the night, through the surgery.
AND IT WAS ONLY JUST THE BEGINNING.
DOCTORS PLACED HIM IN A COMA FOR THREE WEEKS TO GIVE HIS BRAIN TIME TO HEAL FOLLOWING THAT FIRST SURGERY.
SINCE THEN HE'S HAD THREE MORE SURGERIES -- ONE OF THEM 27 HOURS LONG.
James Floyd, Warner Robins: We had no idea where he would get back to, what step we would have to re-do and we are having to do re-do walking and one of his vocal chords is stationary right now so his voice is just a whisper.
ADEN SPENDS MOST OF HIS TIME AT THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL IN ATLANTA.
HIS FATHER STAYS WITH HIM.
NOW ADEN IS JUST GETTING WELL ENOUGH TO SPEND WEEKENDS AT HOME.
Aden Floyd, Warner Robins: I like to come and be home.
James Floyd, Warner Robins: The feeling of being home is great especially for Aden. It gives him something to count down to during the week. It gives him a constant reminder of why he is there getting stronger, so eventually we'll be home all the time.
Aden Floyd, Warner Robins: We marked it off with an X, like a calendar.
AND WHEN DEALING WITH A TRAUMATIC EVENT LIKE THIS--IT'S HARD TO THINK OF ANYTHING ELSE.
Amy Floyd, Warner Robins: You never think this is going to happen to you that you'll have a child with a sudden illness, that you have to figure out how to go to work, how you get your other child to school
BUT WITH THE HELP OF PROJECT GIVING --THE FLOYDS DON'T HAVE TO WORRY AS MUCH ABOUT HOW TO PAY FOR ADEN'S MEDICAL BILLS *AND* THE MORTGAGE.
James Floyd, Warner Robins: The money that we would have put toward the mortgage, putting it toward the medical bills, putting it toward now this time of year for Christmas for the kids. AND THAT MAKES HIS ROAD TO RECOVERY A LITTLE EASIER.
James Floyd, Warner Robins: The fact that he survived these, everything, the emergency surgery, the incredibly long surgeries to remove the AVM, let's us all know he is incredibly strong and that he will be able to get back to where he was before. >>
THE FLOYDS TELL US DOCTORS SAY ADEN SHOULD BE OUT OF DAY REHAB SOMETIME IN FEBRUARY.
