GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
I'M LEAH JOHNSON..
THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

THE NOVEMBER 23RD DEADLINE FOR THE WASHINGTON SUPER COMMITTEE IS FAST APPROACHING WITH NO DEAL IN SIGHT.
THE 12 MEMBER BI-PARTISAN GROUP HAS TO CUT AT LEAST ONE-POINT-TWO TRILLION DOLLARS FROM THE FEDERAL BUDGET.
IF THEY DON'T REACH A DEAL... IT COULD FORCE CUTS TO THE MILITARY..... MEDICARE AND MEDICAID.
TOM SCOTT... THE PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL UNION THAT REPRESENTS 45-HUNDRED EMPLOYEES AT ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE IS WATCHING THE COMMITTEE CLOSELY.
HE SAYS THE CUTS WOULD HAVE A DEVASTATING IMPACT ON ROBINS... CAUSING JOB LOSS... FURLOUGHS... AND REDUCTIONS IN RETIREMENT PAY TO FEDERAL EMPLOYEES.
SCOTT SAYS THE IMPACT WOULD TRICKLE DOWN TO THE COMMUNITY.
Tom Scott: (4:05) "It's going to have a domino affect. Your talking about the largest employer, businesses do direct or indirect business. Even the little waitress down her at Nu-Way or the McDonalds. Those people get purchasing for food from who? Employees that come out of Robins."
REPORTS FROM WASHINGTON TODAY MAKE THE CHANCES OF THE SUPERCOMMITTEE REACHING A DEAL BY THE DEADLINE SEEM SLIM.
U-S SENATOR FROM GEORGIA.... SAXBY CHAMBLISS TOLD US BY PHONE... HE'S STILL CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC.
CHAMBLISS SAYS HE URGED THE COMMITTEE TO CUT MORE THAN THE REQUIRED ONE-POINT-TWO TRILLION.
Saxby Chambliss: (3:40) "Our advice to them was go big. Do what's neccessary to respond to what the markets are looking for and that's in the range of a four trillion dollar defecit reduction package."
REPUBLICANS ARE SAYING THEY CAN'T REACH A DEAL BECAUSE DEMOCRATS WON'T BEND ENOUGH ON SPENDING CUTS.
DEMOCRATS SAY REPUBLICANS WON'T GO FAR ENOUGH ON TAX HIKES.
IF THEY REACH A DEAL BY NEXT WEDNESDAY... CONGRESS WOULD HAVE TO VOTE ON THE PACKAGE BY DECEMBER 23RD.

TODAY'S 13 WMAZ DOT COM WEB POLL ASKS... HOW CLOSELY ARE YOU FOLLOWING THE 'SUPERCOMMITTEE' NEGOTIATIONS?
SO FAR 11 PERCENT OF YOU SAY CLOSELY
28 PERCENT OF YOU SAY SOMEWHAT
AND 61 PERCENT OF YOU SAY NOT AT ALL

VOTE NOW... LOOK FOR THE QUESTION ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF OUR HOMEPAGE AT 13WMAZ DOT COM.

FORMER PENN STATE FOOTBALL COACH JOE PATERNO HAS A TREATABLE FORM OF LUNG CANCER.
THE NEWS CAME TODAY FROM ONE OF PATERNO'S SONS SHORTLY AFTER YET ANOTHER INVESTIGATION BEGUN ON THE SEX SCANDAL THAT BROUGHT DOWN THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL LEGEND.
MANUEL GALLEGUS HAS MORE FROM STATE COLLEGE... PENNSYLVANIA.
Another setback for Joe Paterno.
His son announced Friday his father has a treatable form of lung cancer.
Doctors diagnosed the 84-year-old last weekend...just days after Penn State trustees fired him for his connection to the child sex abuse scandal.

(MOS)
"It's really sad. It's a matter of how much can this poor guy handle? "

:18 - :24
(SOT: Becky Basile/Junior)
18:47:36 "He's a strong guy, he's going to come out of this with his head held high."

Friday the school introduced its new athletic director, Dr. David Joyner, who pledged to help the university get back on track.

:31 - :37
(SOT: Dr. David JOYNER/Penn State Athletic Director)
"AS YOU WATCH WHAT I DO, AND HOW THIS UNIVERSITY BEHAVES, YOU WILL KNOW AND APPRECIATE THAT I AM ABOUT DOING THE RIGHT THING."

As a member of the board of trustees, Joyner says the group was never informed of multiple allegations of sexual abuse by football coach Jerry Sandusky until news of a criminal investigation broke in March.

Fallout from the scandal has cost 4 school officials their jobs.

:53 - 1:04
(Standup Bridge: Manuel Gallegus/CBS News/State College, PA)
"The NCAA is also now examining whether Penn State broke any rules in its handling of the scandal. The governing board for college sports may launch a formal investigation that could take months."

Sandusky is charged with 40 counts of sexually abusing young boys...many of whom he met at the charity he founded for disadvantaged youth.

Now, the New York Times reports the charity is preparing to close its doors...as it faces an onslaught of criticism into what its officials may or may not have known.
PATERNO IS ALREADY UNDERGOING TREATMENT AND HIS DOCTORS ARE OPTIMISTIC HE'LL MAKE A FULL RECOVERY.

TWO BIBB COUNTY INMATES DIED FIVE DAYS APART... BUT THEIR DEATHS DON'T APPEAR TO BE CONNECTED.
THAT'S ACCORDING TO BIBB COUNTY SHERIFF JERRY MODENA.
SHERIFF'S SPOKESMAN SEAN DEFOE SAYS 33-YEAR-OLD KENYON HOPKINS DIED NOVEMBER 12TH... AND 34-YEAR-OLD TERRANCE DANIELS DIED YESTERDAY.
BOTH MEN EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTY BREATHING BEFORE THEY DIED.
DEFOE SAYS THE TWO LIVED ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE JAIL.
MODENA SAYS... AT THIS POINT HE THINKS THE CIRCUMSTANCES ARE JUST COINCIDENCE.
HE SAYS THEY'RE LOOKING INTO WHAT CAUSED BOTH DEATHS.
"For us, what we're looking at is how to protect for the future. We certainly feel very bad about these two. But what I'm looking for is to make sure we gave them every amenity in terms of their health protection that we could. So far, we're ok on that."
DEFOE SAYS AUTOPSY RESULTS OF THE FIRST INMATE... KEYTON HOPKINS DID NOT REVEAL A CAUSE OF DEATH.
HE SAYS THEY'RE STILL WAITING ON TOXICOLOGY RESULTS.

A STATE PANEL IS WORKING TO OVERHAUL SENTENCING STANDARDS THAT COULD PUT MORE CONVICTS BACK ON THE STREET SOONER.
STATE REPRESENTATIVE WILLIE TALTON... A MEMBER OF THAT PANEL CALLED THE SPECIAL COUNCIL ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM SAYS PRISON OVERCROWDING IS A PROBLEM.
HE SAYS PEOPLE WHO'VE COMMITTED NON-VIOLENT CRIMES SHOULD BE GIVEN ALTERNATIVES LIKE PROBATION AND A CHANCE TO WORK.
A REPORT RELEASED BY THE PANEL TODAY SAYS LENGTHY PRISON SENTENCES BY NON-VIOLENT OFFENDERS COST THE STATE MILLIONS EVERY YEAR.
"They are not violent crimes and by no means do I want the citizens of Georgia to feel like we're compromising between money and sentencing. Um, their protection is going to be taken care of."
ACCORDING TO THE PANEL'S REPORT... GEORGIA WOULD HAVE TO SPEND AN ADDITIONAL TWO HUNDRED SIXTY-FOUR MILLION DOLLARS TO MAKE ROOM FOR SIXTY THOUSAND INMATES...UNLESS SENTENCING POLICIES CHANGE.

SAVANNAH-BASED DIAMOND CRYSTAL BRANDS IS RECALLING SUGAR CANISTERS THAT WERE ACCIDENTALLY FILLED WITH NON-DAIRY CREAMER.
COMPANY OFFICIALS SAY THE 12 OUNCE CONTAINERS WERE LABELED AS SUGAR... BUT CONTAIN CREAMER.
NON-DAIRY CREAMER HAS A DERIVATIVE OF MILK... THAT CAN AFFECT PEOPLE WHO ARE ALLERGIC TO MILK PRODUCTS.
THE RECALLED PRODUCTS HAVE LOT NUMBER G-2-9-3-B.
IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THE RECALLED CANISTERS... YOU CAN CALL DIAMOND CRYSTAL BRANDS AT 800-654-5115 BETWEEN 8 A-M AND FIVE P-M.
THAT NUMBER AGAIN IS 800-654-5115.

THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION SAYS THE DRUG AVASTIN SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR BREAST CANCER PATIENTS.
THE FDA SAYS THERE'S NO PROOF THE DRUG EXTENDS THE LIVES OF BREAST CANCER PATIENTS.
FDA COMMISSIONER DOCTOR MARGARET HAMBURG CALLED THE DECISION DIFFICULT..
BUT SAYS PATIENTS MUST HAVE CONFIDENCE THAT DRUGS SOLD FOR THEIR CONDITION ARE EFFECTIVE.
AVASTIN CAN STILL BE SOLD TO TREAT COLON CANCER AND CERTAIN TYPES OF TUMORS... BUT THE RULING IS EXPECTED TO INFLUENCE INSURANCE COVERAGE.

THE OLD MACON MALL... HAS A BRAND NEW LOOK.
TODAY... THE MALL DEBUTED SOME OF ITS MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR RENOVATIONS TO THE BUILDING INSIDE AND OUT.
THE OWNERS HOPE THE CHANGES WILL BRING MORE HOLIDAY SHOPPERS THROUGH THE DOOR.
AS AUSTIN LEWIS FOUND... SOME SHOPPERS SAY THEY HARDLY RECOGNIZE THE MACON MALL AT ALL.
<<Bonnie Young, Macon: This is cleaner, newer, prettier, it's just more sophisticated.
AND YOUNG ISN'T THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THIS.
CITY AND COUNTY LEADERS CHECKED OUT THE MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FACELIFT TO THE MACON MALL.
AND EVEN THEY CAN'T BELIEVE HOW DIFFERENT IT IS.
Mayor Robert Reichert: the transformation that they have already made in the existing part of the mall---with the landscaping outside, the new sign board, the new round about, you notice it when you drive in.
CHANGES THAT INCLUDE A NEW TRAFFIC CIRCLE---NEWER PARKING LOTS AND LANDSCAPING TO THE OUTSIDE---
AND INSIDE--YOU'LL NOTICE A FRESH COAT OF PAINT AND WALL MURALS--NEW CARPETING---AND SKY LIGHTS.
SOME SHOPPERS SAY IT ALL MAKES THE MALL LOOK MORE POLISHED.
Lauren Jones, Macon: Before it was all dark, you couldn't really see anything, there was tile flooring everywhere, it was not very friendly, this is a lot bigger, a lot nicer looking for everybody.
Michelle Waller, Macon: Before they have a lot of empty spaces, but now the gaps are filled in.
THE MALL'S OWNERS HAVE BEEN RENOVATING THE INSIDE SINCE THE SPRING---AND THEY ARE HOPING THESE BIG CHANGES WILL DRAW SHOPPERS IN.
John Gibson, Member Manager, Hull Storey Gibson : They are going to find that this is a very safe, secure and beautiful environment that they are going to enjoy and they can once again take pride in their Macon Mall.
AND FOR SHOPPERS LIKE YOUNG---SHE'S NOT ONLY HAPPY WITH THE CHANGES, BUT SHE'S GENUINELY SURPRISED BY THE TRANSFORMATION.
