AND I'M LEAH JOHNSON..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE STARTED HANDING OUT ABOUT 260 VOLUNTARY SEPARATION AND EARLY RETIREMENT PACKAGES TODAY.
MAJOR GENERAL BOB MCMAHON SAYS IT'S PART OF A PLAN TO CUT 516 POSITIONS AT THE BASE.
THIS MORNING.. HE BROKE DOWN THE IMPACT OF DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE CUTS ON ROBINS.
HE SAYS THE FIRST WAVE OF SEPARATION AND RETIREMENT PACKAGES WENT TO PEOPLE WORKING IN THE 78TH AIR BASE WING... AND PROGRAM MANAGEMENT ON C-17 AIRCRAFT.
MOST WERE OFFERED A 25-THOUSAND DOLLAR BUY-OUT... AND HAVE UNTIL NEXT THURSDAY TO ACCEPT IT.
A SECOND ROUND OF OFFERS WILL GO OUT IN 2012.
THOSE WILL MAINLY AFFECT MANAGEMENT JOBS... AS PART OF THE AIR FORCE'S PLAN TO REORGANIZE COMMAND STRUCTURE.
Major General Bob McMahon: (54:55) "Approximatly 96.3% of the folks that currently work at Robins will not directly be impacted by these reductions. However, for each and every individual that is impacted, we will do everything possible to ensure a smooth transition, either to a new position or to afford them opportunities to voluntarilty early retire or seperate from civil service."
MCMAHON SAYS HE HOPES THEY WON'T HAVE TO LAY ANYONE OFF... BUT HE SAYS THERE'S STILL ANOTHER BIG SHOE TO DROP.
YESTERDAY... THE AIR FORCE SAID... IN ADDITION TO THE 9-THOUSAND JOB CUTS THEY'RE ALREADY PLANNING... THEY'RE LOOKING FOR ANOTHER 45-HUNDRED TO ELIMINATE.

"We need to have a portfolio model where we have a school of engineering, a school for the arts, a sports academy, a variety of schools, have a menu of different options and go to our students and ask them, what's your interest and place them at a school where they still wil recieve a very high quality education and at the same time be part of a school culture that they are really actually interested in."
