GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
I'M LEAH JOHNSON..
THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

HUNDREDS OF MOURNERS PAID THEIR RESPECTS TODAY TO FORMER BIBB COUNTY SHERIFF RAY WILKES.
WILKES DIED OF NATURAL CAUSES OVER THE WEEKEND.
HE WAS 82.
FAMILY... FRIENDS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS FILLED THE SANCTUARY AT INGLESIDE BAPTIST CHURCH.
SOME SHARED STORIES OF A HARD WORKER WHO ALWAYS LENT A HELPING HAND.
WILKES' CHILDREN SAY HE LOVED GOING TO WORK AT THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE... BUT THEY SAY FAMILY CAME FIRST FOR THEIR FATHER.
Ray Wilkes, Jr.: "He never wanted anything to separate the family, and if somebody hurt he was there to help pick up the pieces. And it was always this is no big deal. This isn't a problem we can't solve. And when one of us is down, we're all down, we all pull together and we all help. Everybody's together."
SHERIFF WILKES STARTED WITH THE BIBB COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IN 19-52 AS A DEPUTY.
HE SPENT 17 YEARS AS SHERIFF BEFORE RETIRING IN 19-92.

MACON POLICE CHIEF MIKE BURNS SAYS HE'S FED-UP WITH THE LACK OF SUPPORT FROM CITY COUNCIL ON HIS POLICE HIRING PLAN.
THE CHIEF PITCHED THE PLAN TO COUNCIL AFTER MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT ASKED HIM TO DEVELOP A RESPONSE TO A RASH OF YOUTH AND GANG VIOLENCE.
IN SEPTEMBER... THE CHIEF REQUESTED SIX OFFICERS... AND ABOUT THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS TO PAY FOR THEM.
NOW... MACON'S PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE HAS WHITTLED THE PLAN DOWN TO A CIVILIAN YOUTH COORDINATOR.. WITH THE SALARY TO BE DETERMINED.
CHIEF BURNS SAYS... COUNCIL'S CURRENT PLAN IS UNACCEPTBALE.
Mike Burns: "I'm very fed up, I don't know how it will turn out. What they will do. But we're going to keep protecting the citizens the best we can with what we have, with no support."
COUNCILMAN LONNIE MILEY SAYS THE ISSUE WILL COME UP BEFORE THE APPROPRIATION'S COMMITTEE NEXT WEEK TO TALK ABOUT HOW MUCH TO PAY THE CIVIL HIRE.
CHIEF BURNS WILL JOIN STEPHANIE SUSSKIND TOMORROW DURING EYEWITNESS NEWS MORNIN'... AND WE WANT YOUR QUESTIONS.
YOU CAN EMAIL THEM TO EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 13WMAZ DOT COM... OR SUBMIT THEM TO OUR FACEBOOK PAGE.

THE SPLOST VOTE IS A WEEK AWAY... AND CITY AND COUNTY LEADERS ARE MAKING A FINAL PUSH TO GET VOTERS TO CLICK 'YES' AT THE POLLS.
SOME LOCAL BUSINESS LEADERS MET ON THE STEPS OF CITY HALL TODAY... IN SUPPORT OF THE SPLOST.
THEY SAY IT'LL BOOST THE LOCAL ECONOMY AND THEIR BOTTOM LINE.
PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICIALS... MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT AND COUNTY COMMISSION CHAIRMAN SAM HART ALSO HELD AN EVENT DOWNTOWN.
THEY TALKED ABOUT MUCH-NEEDED PUBLIC SAFETY UPGRADES AND HOW THE SPLOST IS THE BEST WAY TO GET IT DONE.
BIBB COUNTY SHERIFF JERRY MODENA SAYS FRIDAY'S CRASH OF THE 911 CALL CENTER'S RADIO SYSTEM IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW URGENT THE COUNTY NEEDS THE SPLOST.
"For a period of about 7-8 minutes we were completly off the grid. And every emergency coming down the pipe here, we would to have either get it out over regular telephone lines or carrier pigeon."
MODENA SAYS THE SYSTEM FAILURE LEFT DISPATCHERS UNABLE TO CONTACT POLICE ABOUT EMERGENCIES.

ATLANTA'S PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM WILL KEEP ITS ACCREDITATION WITH THE SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS.
A DISTRICT SPOKESMAN ANNOUNCED TODAY THAT THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IS OFF PROBATION WITH THE ASSOCIATION.
IT'S NOW ON ACCREDITATION WITH ADVISEMENT.
THE ATLANTA-BASED S-A-C-S PUT ATLANTA ON PROBATION IN JANUARY BECAUSE OF SQUABBLING AMONG THE SCHOOL BOARD... AND THREATENED TO PULL ACCREDIATION ALTOGETHER.
THE BOARD HAS SINCE ELECTED NEW LEADERSHIP.
LOSING ACCREDITATION WOULD HAVE PUT THE 50 THOUSAND-STUDENT DISTRICT IN DANGER OF LOSING PRIVATE GRANTS AND COULD HAVE KEPT STUDENTS FROM GAINING ADMISSION AND WINNING SCHOLARSHIPS AT SOME COLLEGES.

MIRIAM PARIS WON THE STATE SENATE DISTRICT 26 SEAT IN A SPECIAL ELECTION IN AUGUST.
SHE TOOK OFFICE IN TIME TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY'S REAPPORTIONMENT SESSION.
PARIS TALKED ABOUT HER ELECTION.. CONSOLIDATION.. COMMUTER RAIL SERVICES AND OTHER ISSUES DURING THIS WEEK'S CLOSE-UP PROGRAM.
SHE ALSO DISCUSSED PARTISAN POLITICS.. INCLUDING ELECTED OFFICIALS WHO SWITCH PARTIES.
PARIS SAYS INDIVIDUALS HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE PARTIES.. BUT SAYS THE DECISION SHOULD BE MADE DURING ELECTIONS.. NOT AFTERWARDS.
Miriam Paris, State Senator: I have a hard time accepting when people run as a Democrat and then after they win switch over. To me that's just not a good policy when you are in a position where people are choosing you to represent them.
ANIOTHER TOPIC ON PARIS' MIND... CONSOLIDATION OF MACON AND BIBB COUNTY GOVERNMENTS.
SEVERAL ATTEMPTS AT CONSOLIDATION BOGGED DOWN IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY... BUT SOME LEADERS BELIEVE A MEASURE WILL GET THROUGH THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY NEXT YEAR.
PARIS SUPPORTS UNIFICATION... AND PROMISES TO HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN.
Miriam Paris, State Senator: Our duplication of services is troublesome and it's expensive to both the city and the county.
PARIS SERVED ON THE FIFTEEN-MEMBER MACON CITY COUNCIL... SHE SAYS THE GOVERNING BOARD FOR A CONSOLIDATED GOVERNMENT SHOULD HAVE FEWER MEMBERS.
Miriam Paris, State Senator: Looking at the size of our city, seven or nine, that's a good number for us, I think, and I think that's very crucial, critical to our success, downsizing council.
YOU CAN CATCH CLOSE-UP AT NOON SATURDAY AND SIX A-M SUNDAY RIGHT HERE ON WMAZ.

REPUBLICANS FIGHTING FOR THEIR PARTY'S NOMINATION TOOK TURNS TALKING TO AN IOWA AUDIENCE TODAY... ABOUT THEIR PLANS TO SIMPLIFY THE TAX CODE.
BUT THE CANDIDATE BEST KNOWN FOR HIS TAX PLAN... HERMAN CAIN... WASN'T THERE.
CAIN HAS LED AN UNCONVENTIONAL CAMPAIGN SO FAR... AND IN WASHINGTON TODAY HE FOUND HIMSELF ANSWERING ANOTHER ROUND OF QUESTIONS... BUT THIS TIME ABOUT SEXUAL HARASSMENT ALLEGATIONS.
DANIELLE NOTTINGHAM HAS MORE.
GOP White House hopefuls talked up their economic agendas at a manufacturing forum in Pella, Iowa.

(SOT: RICK SANTORUM / R - PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE) - "THERE WOULD BE NO CORPORATE TAX FOR PEOPLE WHO MAKE THINGS IN AMERICA."

They're spending a lot of time in the state - with just two months until the caucuses.

Texas Governor Rick Perry and Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann each led the pack in Iowa at one point. The candidates are looking to regain that momentum with their plans to create jobs.

(SOT: RICK PERRY / R - PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE) - "I WANT EVERYBODY TO HAVE MORE MONEY AND MY TAX PLANS DO THAT AND THAT'S WHAT AN AMERICAN PRESIDENT NEEDS TO BE DOING."

(SOT: REP. MICHELE BACHMANN / R - PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE) - "I WANT TO HAVE FLATTER, FAIRER, MORE SIMPLE TAX CODE."

(Danielle Nottingham, bridge) - "Current Iowa front runner Herman Cain was missing from Tuesday's event. He's here in Washington, But, instead of promoting his 9-9-9 tax plan, he's still addressing sexual harassment allegations."

Politco reported accusations that Cain acted inappropriately toward two women when he led the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s. He's had to back peddle after initially denying he knew anything about it.

(SOT: HERMAN CAIN / R - PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE) - "ANY DISCREPANCY IS MERELY BECAUSE TRYING TO REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT THE PARAMETERS WERE FROM 12 YEARS AGO IS JUST A LITTLE BIT DIFFICULT."

So far Cain's explanation isn't hurting his fundraising. His chief of staff said the campaign raised a quarter of a million dollars online in one day.
TWO OF CAIN'S OPPONENTS ADDRESSED THE ALLEGATIONS TODAY.
RICK PERRY SAID, HE'S NOT COMMENTING UNLESS THOSE ACCUSATIONS BECOME FACTS.
RICK SANTORUM TOLD REPORTERS, RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT CAN LEAD TO AN UNCOMFORTABLE AMOUNT OF INSPECTION OF A CANDIDATE'S PAST LIFE -- AND HOW CAIN HANDLES THIS ISSUE WILL TELL VOTERS A LOT ABOUT HIM.

IF YOU'RE IN THE MARKET FOR A HEARSE, THERE'S ONE GOING UP FOR AUCTION AT ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE.
IT'S A 1985 GRAY CADILLAC FLEETWOOD.
JOHN MCGHEE WORKS FOR GOVERMENT LIQUIDATORS, A COMPANY WITH A LOCATION AT ROBINS.
THE COMPANY SELLS SURPLUS EQUIPMENT FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE, SUCH AS CARS, LAWN MOWERS, GENERATORS AND GOLF CARTS.
MCGHEE SAYS.... IN HIS TEN YEARS WITH THE COMPANY, HE HAS NEVER PUT A HEARSE UP FOR AUCTION.
HE SAYS THIS PARTICULAR ONE NEEDS SOME REPAIRS TO THE INTERIOR AND A PAINT JOB, BUT THE ENGINE RUNS WELL.
John McGhee, Warner Robins: "They'll be buying a 1985 Cadillac fleetwood hearse. It's in running conditions with all the curtains and all the amenities of a hearse"
THE BIDDING STARTS AT 150-DOLLARS AT MIDNIGHT NOVEMBER 8TH... AND ENDS ON THE 10TH AT 5 P-M.
IF YOU'RE INTERESTED... MCGHEE SAYS HE'LL BE GLAD TO LET POTENTIAL BUYERS COME OUT AND KICK THE TIRES... BEFORE BIDDING.
