GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
I'M FRANK MALLOY..
AND I'M LEAH JOHNSON..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

MACON'S CITY COUNCIL AND POLICE DEPARTMENT ARE STILL GOING BACK AND FORTH ON PLANS FOR MORE STAFF.
THE NEW COPS ARE PART OF MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT'S PLAN TO FIGHT STREET CRIME... WHICH INCLUDES REACHING OUT TO THE CITY'S YOUNG PEOPLE.
THIS AFTERNOON... THE PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE DECIDED NOT TO VOTE ON A NEW PLAN FROM MACON POLICE.
THE NEW PROPOSAL CALLED FOR THREE NEW HIRES... INCLUDING TWO NEW OFFICERS AND A CIVILIAN CO-ORDINATOR.
COMMITTEE MEMBERS WANTED MORE DETAILS... LIKE HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST.
REICHERT AND POLICE CHIEF MIKE BURNS WANT TO ADD TO THE DEPARTMENT... BUT HAVEN'T CONVINCED THE COUNCIL YET.
THEY FIRST ASKED FOR SIX OFFICERS... BUT TRIMMED THAT DOWN.
COUNCILMAN LARRY SCHLESINGER SAYS TODAY... THEY GOT ENOUGH DETAIL ABOUT EACH NEW HIRE'S ROLE... TO MOVE FORWARD.
"Comprehensive plans evolve, they're not neccessarily created, they evolve according to need, so I think this is a step in that direction, it's a beginning"
SCHLESINGER SAYS ONCE THEY GET THE FINAL DETAILS ON SALARY COSTS... HE DOES EXPECT THE COMMITTEE TO PASS THE RESOLUTION.

THE PASTOR WHO PROTESTED AGAINST THE WARNER ROBINS HIGH SCHOOL'S DEMON MASCOT LAST YEAR... IS SUING THE CITY.

I said the Demon is a deity
CROSBY'S SUIT SAYS HE AND HIS SUPPORTERS FIND THE DEMONS LOGO AND MASCOT "OFFENSIVE TO GOD."
HE WAS ARRESTED AT LEAST TWICE IN AUGUST 2010 DURING PROTESTS OUTSIDE WARNER ROBINS HIGH SCHOOL.
HE SAYS THE ARREST AND CITY'S ANTI-PROTEST RULES VIOLATE HIS RIGHTS TO FREE SPEECH.
I think that it's my amendment right...that I have freedom of religion and that i have freedom of speech. I don't think I should have to file a permit with the city that I'm protesting against... to protest against them.
WARNER ROBINS CITY ATTORNEY JIM ELLIOTT SAID THEY RECEIVED THE LAWSUIT THIS AFTERNOON.
HE SAID CITIES CAN REGULATE PROTESTS TO MAINTAIN THE PUBLIC ORDER... AND THAT THE CITY AND POLICE HANDLED THE CROSBY CASE FAIRLY.

THE 215-MILE LONG FALL LINE FREEWAY WILL ADD ANOTHER 7 AND A HALF MILES TO THE PROJECT.

COLLINS SAYS ROUTE 24 WILL RUN INTO THE NEW FALL LINE FREEWAY AND SAYS 11 HOMES WILL HAVE TO BE RELOCATED.
I SPOKE TO ONE AREA HOMEOWNER WHO DIDN'T WANT TO GO ON CAMERA... BUT SAYS HE'LL BE ABLE TO KEEP HIS HOME... AND WIDENING THE ROAD OFF OF HIS DRIVEWAY DOESN'T BOTHER HIM.
SEVERAL MILES FURTHER IN WASHINGTON COUTNY... CONSTRUCTION CREWS BLAZE THE WAY ON A DIFFERENT PORTION OF THE FREEWAY.

HE SAYS THE SCHOOL SYSTEM INTENDS TO RAISE 125 MILLION DOLLARS FROM THE TAX.
ABOUT A QUARTER OF THAT WOULD PAY FOR TECHNOLOGY... INCLUDING INTERACTIVE BOARDS IN CLASSROOMS... MINI-LAPTOPS FOR STUDENTS AND WIRELESS INTERNET CONNECTIONS IN ALL BUILDINGS.
Robin HInes, Superintendent: "We are dreadfully behind. We need to catch up with technology and provide the work environment for our students and teachers that our students are going to experience once they get out of our schools into college or the work force."
