GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
I'M FRANK MALLOY..
AND I'M LEAH JOHNSON..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

NEARLY TWO MONTHS AFTER MACON MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT LAID OUT A SWEEPING- ANTI GANG AND YOUTH VIOLENCE AGENDA... HE SAYS HE'S BEEN UNABLE TO IMPLEMENT MANY PARTS OF THE PLAN.
HE SAYS THAT'S BECAUSE THINGS LIKE BEEFING UP THE DARE PROGRAM... AND THE POLICE ATHLETIC LEAGUE... NEED POLICE OFFICERS TO IMPLEMENT THEM.
BUT CITY COUNCIL HASN'T APPROVED THE THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS HE ASKED FOR.... TO HIRE SIX NEW OFFICERS.
PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE MEMBERS SAID FIRST....THEY WANT MORE SPECIFICS ON EACH OFFICER'S ROLE.
BUT REICHERT SAYS THAT'S A BACKWARD APPROACH.
"A good way to do this would be to hire the people and tell them to develop the programs and then hold them accountable for the results. To me that's the effective way to administer this type program, not to continue to talk it to death trying to hash out what the details are before you ever hire the professionals."
HE SAYS HE'S ALSO STILL TOYING WITH WHETHER TO PROPOSE A STRICTER TEEN CURFEW.
"We keep looking for anecdotal evidence that a curfew law would have helped and in all of the recent homicides, in all of the recent violence the curfew law would have absolutely no appication, wouldn't have changed the outcome one bit."
THAT'S BECAUSE HE SAYS ALL THE SUSPECTS IN THE RECENT RASH OF TEEN SHOOTINGS... WERE EITHER TOO OLD ... OR COMMITTED THE CRIMES OUTSIDE CURFEW HOURS.
BUT THE MAYOR SAYS HE'S STILL CONSIDERING AN AMENDMENT TO THE CURRENT LAW... WHICH SAYS TEENS SIXTEEN AND UNDER MUST BE OFF THE STREETS BY MIDNIGHT.
HE MAY PROPOSE AN EARLIER CURFEW FOR CHILDREN FOURTEEN AND UNDER.

THE GBI SAYS IT'S NOW INVOLVED IN THE INVESTIGATION OF A FRIDAY-NIGHT BRAWL IN HANCOCK COUNTY THAT SEVERELY INJURED A VISITING FOOTBALL COACH.
A NEWS RELEASE FROM GBI SPOKESMAN JOHN BANKHEAD SAYS THEY'LL GET INVOLVED AT THE REQUEST OF HANCOCK COUNTY SHERIFF TOMLYN PRIMUS.
WARREN COUNTY COACH DAVE DANIELS SUFFERED SEVERE FACIAL INJURIES WHEN A HANCOCK PLAYER ALLEGEDLY STRUCK HIM IN THE FACE WITH A HELMET.
HE WENT THROUGH SURGERY LAST WEEK FOR FACE AND EYE INJURIES.
THE SCHOOL DISTRICT SAYS HE'S BACK AT HOME AND WATCHING FILMS AND HELPING HIS TEAM PREPARE FOR FRIDAY'S GAME.
HANCOCK SHERIFF PRIMUS HAS NOT RETURNED OUR PHONE CALLS.

WESTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL CAN KEEP THE SEMINOLE AS THEIR MASCOT... BUT THEY'LL HAVE TO MAKE SOME CHANGES.
A WHILE BACK - THE SCHOOL GOT A LETTER FROM A LICENSING COMPANY... ALLEGING THE HIGH SCHOOL WAS INFRINGING ON FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY'S RIGHTS BY USING DESIGN AND WORD MARKS SUCH AS SEMINOLE AND 'NOLE... WITHOUT A LICENSE.
F-S-U'S LAWYER AND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT'S ATTORNEY WROTE A SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT... AND THE SCHOOL BOARD APPROVED IT AT TONIGHT'S MEETING.
UNDER THE AGREEMENT... WESTSIDE WOULD HAVE ROYALTY FREE LICENSE TO REFER TO THEMSELVES AS THE SEMINOLES OR NOLES FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS... AS LONG AS WESTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL OR WESTSIDE APPEARS NEXT TO THE WORD MARK.
THE BIBB SCHOOL BOARD TONIGHT VOTED TO APPROVE THE AGREEMENT WHICH WILL AUTOMATICALLY RENEW.

ALSO TONIGHT - THE SCHOOL SYSTEM RECOGNIZED ITS FIVE FINALISTS FOR 2011-2012 TEACHER OF THE YEAR..
THE GROUP INCLUDES THIAGO RODRIGUES ALEIXO FROM ELAM ALEXANDER - BURKE CAMPUS..
PAUL ALLEN FROM SOUTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL..
DEBORAH H. BRASWELL FROM MILLER MAGNET MIDDLE SCHOOL..
TOMIKA JONES FROM BRUCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND LISA THOMPSON FROM RUTLAND HIGH SCHOOL.
THE 2012 TEACHER OF THE YEAR WILL BE NAMED ON NOVEMBER 14..

THE HISTORIC MACON FOUNDATION.. AND MERCER UNIVERSITY PARTNERED TO PULL THESE HOMES.. BUILT IN THE 1890'S.. ABOUT ONE MILE...
JENNIFER MAYER WITH HISTORIC MACON SAYS THEY PLAN TO RESTORE AND SELL THEM... ONCE THEY'RE MOVED TO THEIR NEW HOME ON OGLETHROPE STREET.
Mayer: "That area is in the Beall's Hills neighborhood which is a huge project that historic Macon has been working on for quite some time. Not only is it about restoring homes but it's about the neighborhood revitalization of beall's hill."
MERCER OWNS THE HOMES AND DONATED THEM FOR CONSERVATION...
LARRY BRUMLEY VICE PRESIDENT OF MARKETING SAYS MERCER LOFTS' BUILDER.. SIERRA DEVELOPMENT... FOOTED THE BILL FOR THE MOVE... AND HE SAYS THE COST FOR THE RELOCATION IS MORE THAN WHAT THE HOMES ARE WORTH...
BUT IT'S ALL IN THE NAME OF PRESERVATION....
