GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
    I'M LEAH JOHNSON..
FRANK MALLOY HAS THE NIGHT OFF.

    OUR TOP STORY TONIGHT...
THE MAN WHO GREW APPLE OUT OF A SILICON VALLEY GARAGE AND INTO THE WORLD'S LEADING TECH COMPANY HAS DIED.
APPLE CONFIRMS THAT CHAIRMAN AND FORMER C-E-O STEVE JOBS DIED TODAY AFTER A LONG STRUGGLE WITH PANCREATIC CANCER.
SANDRA ENDO TAKES A LOOK BACK AT JOBS' LIFE.
Today Apple is going to re-invent the phone
SOME LIKENED STEVE JOBS TO A MODERN DAY THOMAS EDISON.
DESPITE HIS UNDERSTATED APPEARANCES, HE WAS LEGENDARY FOR HIS FLAIR AND SHOWMANSHIP.
We asked ourselves what would happen if a macbook and an i-pad hooked up.
JOBS WAS BORN IN SAN FRANCISCO IN 1955.
HE DEVELOPED AN EARLY INTEREST IN TECHNOLOGY, AND AT JUST 20 YEARS OLD, STARTED APPLE COMPUTER IN HIS GARAGE WITH FRIEND STEVE WOZNIAK.
IN TEN YEARS, IT GREW INTO A TWO-BILLION DOLLAR COMPANY WITH MORE THAN FOUR-THOUSAND EMPLOYEES.
IN 1984, APPLE INTRODUCED THE MACHINE THAT LITERALLY CHANGED LIVES FOREVER -- THE MACINTOSH.
People are going to bring them home over the weekend to work on something, Sunday morning they're not going to be able to get their kids away from them and maybe someday they'll even buy a second one to leave at home.
THE MACINTOSH WAS REVOLUTIONARY - IT MADE COMPUTERS EASIER TO USE, WITH A STRANGE LITTLE DEVICE CALLED A MOUSE.
BUT IT WAS EXPENSIVE, AND SALES WERE SLUGGISH.
IN 1985 JOBS WAS FORCED OUT OF APPLE, BUT HE WAS JUST WARMING UP.
IN 1986 HE BOUGHT PIXAR ANIMATION STUDIOS, WHICH LATER PRODUCED HITS LIKE TOY STORY.
HE ALSO STARTED A COMPUTER COMPANY CALLED NEXT.
ITS TECHNOLOGY WAS SO INNOVATIVE THAT APPLE ULTIMATELY BOUGHT NEXT, BRINGING JOBS BACK TO THE COMPANY HE STARTED..
HE SOON BECAME CEO.
IN HIS TENURE, JOBS INTRODUCED TECHNOLOGY THAT FOREVER CHANGED THE WAY WE LISTEN TO MUSIC, AND USE OUR PHONES.
ALL THAT WHILE BATTLING HEALTH PROBLEMS.
IN RECENT YEARS... JOBS BECAME NOTICEABLY THIN AND FRAIL.
IN 2009, HE TOOK A SIX-MONTH LEAVE FROM APPLE, AND EVENTUALLY REVEALED HE'D HAD A LIVER TRANSPLANT.
A YEAR AFTER INTRODUCING THE IPAD, WHICH BROUGHT APPLE ITS MOST PROFITABLE YEAR IN HISTORY, JOBS TOOK ANOTHER LEAVE IN JANUARY 2011.
HE STEPPED BACK INTO THE SPOTLIGHT IN MARCH, MAKING A SURPRISE APPEARANCE TO UNVEIL A THINNER, FASTER UPDATE TO THE IPAD.
IN AUGUST 2011, JOBS ANNOUNCED HIS RESIGNATION, SAYING HE COULD NO LONGER PERFORM THE DUTIES OF C-E-O. HE REMAINED ON WITH APPLE AS CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD.
STEVE JOBS' LEGACY CAN BE FOUND IN HIS DEVICES - LONG ON AESTHETICS AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL.
HE FOLLOWED HIS HEART, AND WITH HIS TECHNOLOGY...
We are calling it...iPhone.
...CHANGED THE WORLD.

STEVE JOBS HAD MORE THAN 200 U-S PATENTS.
THEY INCLUDE THE APPLE ONE COMPUTER DESIGNED MOSTLY FOR ENGINEERS IN 1976.... 1977'S APPLE TWO SUCCESSFUL PERSONAL COMPUTER.
HE ALSO HELD A PATENT FOR THE LISA... THE FIRST COMMERCIAL COMPUTER WITH GRAPHICS... WINDOWS AND A CURSOR CONTROLLED BY A MOUSE.
IN 1984... HE PATENTED THE MACINTOSH... WHICH WAS CHEAPER AND FASTER THAN THE LISA.
THAT WAS FOLLOWED BY THE NEXT COMPUTER... A POWERFUL WORKSTATION THAT ALSO FEATURED THE FIRST WEB BROWSER... IN 1989.
THE I-MAC... IN 1998... FEATURED A BUBBLE OF BLUE PLASTIC THAT ENCLOSED BOTH THE MONITOR AND THE COMPUTER.
IN 2001 CAME THE I-POD... THE DIGITAL MUSIC PLAYER THAT REVOLUTIONIZED THE INDUSTRY.
IN 2003... APPLE INTRODUCED THE I-TUNES STORE... A SITE TO BUY AND DOWNLOAD DIGITAL MUSIC.
2007 SAW THE RELEASE OF THE I-PHONE... THE MOST PROFITABLE SMARTPHONE.
THAT WAS FOLLOWED BY THE RELEASE OF THE I-PAD TABLET IN 2010.
JOBS ALSO HID HIS HEALTH PROBLEMS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
FROM 2009 TO 2011 HE TOOK THREE LEAVES OF ABSENCE -- AND IN MARCH HE INTRODUCED US TO THE IPAD 2 -- IT WOULD BE HIS FINAL PUBLIC APPEARANCE.
APPLE RELEASED A STATEMENT TODAY FROM C-E-O TIM COOK.
      IT READ... IN PART...
"APPLE HAS LOST A VISIONARY AND CREATIVE GENIUS, AND THE WORLD HAS LOST AN AMAZING HUMAN BEING. THOSE OF US WHO HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO KNOW AND WORK WITH STEVE HAVE LOST A DEAR FRIEND AND AN INSPIRING MENTOR. STEVE LEAVES BEHIND A COMPANY THAT ONLY HE COULD HAVE BUILT, AND HIS SPIRIT WILL FOREVER BE THE FOUNDATION OF APPLE."
"WE WILL HONOR HIS MEMORY BY DEDICATING OURSELVES TO CONTINUING THE WORK HE LOVED SO MUCH."
STEVE JOBS WAS 56 YEARS OLD.
STAY WITH US... WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK.

THEY SAY HE SHOT THE GIRL THROUGH A WINDOW... WITH A 22-MAGNUM RIFLE.
INVESTIGATORS TOOK THE WEAPON... HIS CELL PHONE AND COMPUTER... AND THEY'RE STILL INVESTIGATING HIS MOTIVE.
THEY HAVE NOT RELEASED THE NAME OF EITHER CHILD.

LAST MONTH... WE REPORTED THAT NEARLY THE ENTIRE EAST DUBLIN POLICE DEPARTMENT... DIDN'T HAVE THE POWER TO ARREST LAST YEAR...
THAT'S BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T GET THE REQUIRED TRAINING IN THE USE OF DEADLY FORCE.
AND LAST MONTH... A STATE AGENCY DENIED POLICE CHIEF WILLIAM LUECKE'S REQUEST... TO GET *HIS* ARREST POWERS BACK.
POLICE CHIEF WILLIAM LUECKE SAYS HE CAN'T COMMENT BECAUSE THERE'S A CIVIL SUIT OPEN AGAINST THE DEPARTMENT.
ACCORDING TO G-B-I RECORDS... LUECKE SAYS HE DIDN'T GET THE REQUIRED TRAINING BECAUSE HE'S QUOTE A SINGLE DAD WITH FOUR CHILDREN.
IN THE DOCUMENT... LUECKE SAYS IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.
Grace Arrington, East Dublin: "I think that's awful, I think it's terrible. We're supposed to have confidence in our police department that they know. And here they are doing like this. That's awful. If we can't trust them, who can we trust?"
TO BE FAIR AND BALANCED....WE ALSO VISITED THE OFFICES OF DISTRICT ATTORNEY CRAIG FRASER AND THE MAYOR OF EAST DUBLIN.
NEITHER WOULD SPEAK TO US.

FORMER ALASKA GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN SAYS SHE WILL NOT RUN FOR PRESIDENT.
PALIN WAS THE 2008 G-O-P NOMINEE FOR VICE PRESIDENT.
SHE OFTEN HINTED THAT SHE MIGHT RUN FOR PRESIDENT IN 2012... BUT NEVER COMMITTED HERSELF.
TODAY'S ANNOUNCEMENT CAME A DAY AFTER NEW JERSEY GOVERNOR CHRIS CHRISTIE SAID HE WOULD NOT RUN.
REPUBLICAN INSIDERS SAY THE FIELD... WHICH INCLUDES FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY AND TEXAS GOVERNOR RICK PERRY... IS SET.

PERRY POLICE ARE PROPOSING AN IDEA THAT THEY SAY WOULD CATCH THIEVES AND PREVENT CRIME.
THEY WANT COUNCIL TO REQUIRE SOME CITY BUSINESSES TO INSTALL OUTDOOR SECURITY CAMERAS.
LORRA LYNCH JONES EXPLAINS THE CONCEPT AND WHY ONE BUSINESS WANTS TO GET ON-BOARD.

Deborah Cross, Perry (13:45) "They tried to get in here. Fortunatly, they didn't."
DEBORAH CROSS SAYS THE WOULD-BE THEIVES DID DAMAGE THEIR DOORS... AND POSSIBLY THE SAME ONE'S... BROKE INTO THE BAIT AND PAWN SHOP ACROSS THE STREET SUNDAY.
Deborah Cross (14:39) "Were fortunate, really fortunate."
CROSS SAYS INDOOR SECURITY CAMERAS AND ALARMS ALREADY PROTECT THEIR STOCK.

OUTDOOR MONITORS MAY BE IN THE WORKS. AND IF PERRY POLICE GET THEIR WAY... REQUIRED.

CAPTAIN BILL PHELPS SAYS A RECENT ROBBERY AT THIS DOWNTOWN BANK SPARKED THE IDEA. HE SAYS WITH ONLY INDOOR AND NO OUTDOOR SECUITY CAMERAS... THE THEIVES GOT AWAY.
Captain Bill Phelps: (2:28) "We could not determine what direction they went in. We didn't know if they drove-up in a car or did they walk away."
PHELPS SAYS REQUIRED OUTDOOR SECURITY CAMS COULD CATCH DIRECTION... TAG NUMBERS AND VEHICLE INFORMATION... SO THEY CAN CATCH THIEVES FASTER.
Lorra Lynch Jones, EWN: "Police say the security camera requirement would not apply to every business in Perry, but those frequently targeted by thieves, including hotels, convenience stores and pawn shops."
IT'S STILL UNDER CONSIDERATION FOR COST AND EFFECTIVENESS...

CROSS SAYS IT COULD BE A GOOD TOOL FOR CRIME PREVENTION.
Deborah Cross, Perry: "I would rather there be a camera outside and take a chance at catching somebody, than losing jewelry or guns. Guns out on the street are not a good thing."

PHELPS SAYS THE BUSINESSES WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE SECURITY CAMERAS AND THEIR INSTALLATION.
HE'S STILL RESEARCHING THEIR COST... AND PLANS TO BRING THE INFORMATION BACK TO COUNCIL IN TWO WEEKS.
