HELLO EVERYONE AND THANKS FOR JOINING US.
I'M LEAH JOHNSON..
AND I'M FRANK MALLOY..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX.

OUR TOP STORY TONIGHT... THE MACON-BIBB FIREFIGHTER WHO LOST HIS JOB OVER A HAZING STUNT... SAYS HE TOOK THE MOST HEAT... BECAUSE HE'S NOT A HIGH RANKING OFFICER.
CHRIS HUGHES SAYS CAPTAIN STEPHANIE BURKE PLANNED THE ROOKIE-PRANK... AND HE SAYS EVERYONE IN THE FIREHOUSE KNEW ABOUT IT BEFORE IT WENT DOWN.
HUGHES SAYS BURKE ASKED HIM TO GET A FAKE GUN AND HE SAYS HE TEXTED HER QUOTE.... I GOT THE FAKE GUN... AND SAYS SHE REPLIED THAT SHE WOULD CALL OTHERS INVOLVED IN THE PRANK.
HE SAYS HE TOLD CHIEF RIGGINS ABOUT THE MESSAGES... BUT RIGGINS NEVER ASKED TO SEE THEM
HUGHES SAYS BURKE GOT IN CONTACT WITH AT LEAST ONE PERSON INVOLVED IN A SIMILAR HOAX AGAINST HIM SIX YEARS AGO... WHERE A MAN CAME INTO THE STATION WITH A BLOODY SHIRT... FOLLOWED BY A FAKE GUNMAN.
HUGHES SAYS BURKE TOOK PART IN THAT PRANK AS WELL.
Chris Hughes: "It's all based on white shirts. You know, if you're a rank, you got a, kind of a limitation where you can kinda get away with things and that's how he's running this department. And there's a lot of firemen that will contest to that. A lot of firemen that I have talked to that will contest to that. And, you know, being me, I'm a Private, 28 years old, I only got six years. 'Oh, we'll put it on him to please the media to please the citizens that I fired somebody, so let's fire this guy since he don't have that much to lose.' And I don't think that's right."
HUGHES SAYS ROOKIE PRANKS ON FIREFIGHTERS ARE COMMON... AND SAYS THIS IS THE THIRD SHOOTING HOAX HE KNOWS OF IN HIS DEPARTMENT.
HE SAYS THE TROUBLE STARTED THIS TIME WHEN SOMEONE POSTED THE VIDEO TO YOUTUBE.
HE SAYS BURKE ASKED THE FIRE FIGHTER WHO POSTED IT ON-LINE TO TAKE IT DOWN A DAY LATER... BUT IT WAS TOO LATE.
WE COULD NOT REACH STEPHANIE BURKE FOR COMMENT....BUT MACON MAYORAL SPOKESMAN CLAY MURPHEY SAID SHE DENIED KNOWING ABOUT THE PRANK IN ADVANCE.
SHE NOW FACES DEMOTION....MURPHEY SAYS....BECAUSE SHE FAILED TO STOP THE STUNT.

THREE MONTHS AGO TODAY... MACON POLICE DISCOVERED PART OF MISSING MERCER LAW STUDENT LAUREN GIDDINGS' BODY.
POLICE SAY THEY HAVE HER KILLER IN CUSTODY. STEPHEN MCDANIEL IS STILL IN THE BIBB COUNTY JAIL AWAITING TRIAL.
POLICE FOUND GIDDINGS' TORSO IN A TRASH CAN OUTSIDE HER APARTMENT BUILDING ON JUNE 30TH AFTER FRIENDS REPORTED THE TWENTY SEVEN YEAR OLD MISSING.
ELEANOR LISSITYZYN SPOKE WITH SOME KEY FIGURES IN THE CASE... AND JOINS US NOW WITH THE LATEST..
BIBB COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY GREG WINTERS SAYS HE'LL ONLY GET ONE SHOT AT THIS CASE... AND HE INTENDS TO GET IT RIGHT.
WE REACHED WINTERS BY PHONE TODAY... HE SAYS HE'S HASN'T SET A DATE TO SEND MCDANIEL BEFORE A GRAND JURY.
BY STATE LAW....HE HAS 90 DAYS FROM THE DATE MCDANIEL WAS CHARGED... TO GET HIM INDICTED.
AFTER NINETY DAYS... HE SAYS... MCDANIEL IS ENTITLED TO BOND.
BUT HERE'S THE CATCH....MCDANIEL NOW FACES THREE DIFFERENT SETS OF CHARGES...BURGLARY...MURDER...AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY.....AND THAT MEANS HE'LL PROBABLY REMAIN IN JAIL UNTIL AT LEAST MID-NOVEMBER.
AND THAT GIVES WINTERS MORE TIME TO WAIT ON EVIDENCE.
I ALSO SPOKE WITH GIDDINGS' FORMER LANDLADY BONI BUSH THIS AFTERNOON.
BUSH IS NOW LIVING IN GIDDINGS' OLD APARTMENT... AND SAYS THINGS ARE BACK TO NORMAL AT BARRISTERS HALL.
I ALSO ASKED HER ABOUT THOSE BLOOD STAINED BLUE GLOVES DEFENSE INVESGITATORS ALLEDGELY FOUND IN THE COMPLEX'S LAUNDRY ROOM.
WE FIRST HEARD ABOUT THEM DURING MCDANIEL'S COMMITTMENT HEARING IN AUGUST....WHEN MCDANIEL'S ATTORNEY FLOYD BUFORD SAYS DEFENSE INVESIGATORS FOUND THEM.
BUSH SAYS THEY BELONGED TO HER...BUT THEY DIDN'T HAVE BLOOD ON THEM.
SHE SAYS THEY'RE NEW AND NEVER WORN... AND SHE LEFT THEM IN THE LAUNDRY ROOM.
WE ALSO SPOKE BY PHONE TO MCDANIEL'S ATTORNEY FLOYD BUFORD.
HE WOULDN'T SPEAK TO US ON CAMERA ... BUT SAYS MCDANIEL'S HEALTH HAS IMPROVED SOME SINCE AUGUST.
AND FINALLY POLICE SPOKESWOMAN JAMI GAUDET SAYS...THEY HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY NEW EVIDENCE IN RECENT WEEKS FROM THE F-B-I CRIME LAB. POLICE SENT DOZENS OF ITEMS FROM BARRISTERS HALL TO THE F-B-I.
D.A. GREG WINTERS SAYS HE WON'T ASK FOR THE INDICTMENT...UNTIL MORE OF THAT EVIDENCE IS IN HAND.
