A MASSACHUSETTS MAN IS JAIL TONIGHT... CHARGED WITH PLOTTING TO ATTACK THE U-S CAPITOL AND THE PENTAGON USING REMOTE CONTROLLED AIRPLANES LOADED WITH EXPLOSIVES.
CBS NEWS CORRESPONDENT DANIELLE NOTTINGHAM HAS MORE FROM WASHINGTON.
<<
26-year-old Rezwan Ferdaus played drums for a band in Massachusetts...
But investigators say behind the scenes, this college-educated U-S citizen had set up an extensive plot to attack the Pentagon and U-S capitol.
They say he was driven to kill Americans, who he called enemies of Allah.

Under cover agents arrested Ferdaus this morning at a storage facility outside Boston.
They say Ferdaus was waiting to accept a delivery of what he believed to be 25-pounds of plastic explosives, 3 grenades and 6 A-K 47 assault rifles.
Officials say his plan was to wage jihad on American soil by attaching the explosives to remote controlled planes, like these ones and flying them into Washington monuments.

(Standup Bridge: Danielle Nottingham/CBS News/Washington, D.C.)
"Officials say Ferdaus never posed any real threat and his planned attack would not have caused a great deal of damage. From the start, he was plotting with undercover agents that he thought had connections to al Qaida."

Over the last nine months...the agents recorded multiple conversations in which Ferdaus laid out his plans.
They say he traveled to Washington to do surveillance...snapping this picture of the Pentagon.
A park near the Pentagon was where he planned to launch his attack.

(nats)
Wednesday, he made his initial appearance in a federal court outside Boston...not far from his comfortable neighborhood and home where agents say this homegrown terrorist was inspired by jihadist videos.
>> REZWAN FERDAUS FACES CHARGES OF PLOTTING ATTACKS AND SUPPORTING A FOREIGN TERRORIST ORGANIZATION.
IF CONVICTED... HE COULD FACE 55 YEARS IN PRISON.

MORGAN FREEMAN'S CHARACTER IN THE FILM IS A COMPOSITE OF CARROLL AND STRZEMPKA.
Kevin Carroll, Prosthetist: What I get out of the movie is the joy of seeing Winter doing incredible things in the water and the joy that children is getting from this, especially kids with physical challenges, and you know, adults for that matter.
WINTER'S STILL GROWING... SO CARROLL SAYS THEY VISIT HER EVERY FOUR MONTHS AT THE FLORIDA CLEARWATER MARINE AQUARIUM... TO ADJUST HER TAIL.
THE MOVIE "DOLPHIN TALE" IS PLAYING IN THEATERS NATIONWIDE... AND OPENED THIRD AT THE BOX OFFICE OVER THE WEEKEND.

JEWISH COMMUNITIES AROUND THE WORLD OBSERVED ROSH (ROASH) HASHANAH (HA-SHA-NA)... THE JEWISH NEW YEAR... AT SUNDOWN TONIGHT.

IT BEGINS THE HIGH HOLY DAYS... THE MOST SACRED PART OF THE JEWISH CALENDAR YEAR.
Rabbi Larry Schlesinger: "A holiday where we look into ourselves, we consider our character we look at our behaviors we know we've all got faults or warts that need to be improved so during this ten days we're making that anaylsis with the goal of becoming better persons as we go into the new year."
THE HIGH HOLY DAY PERIOD WILL END TEN DAYS FROM NOW WITH YOM KIPPUR.

DURING LAST NIGHT'S GEEK 13... WE BROUGHT YOU SOME OF THE SPECULATION SURROUNDING AMAZON'S NEWEST PRODUCT.
THIS MORNING... THEY RAISED THE STAKES IN THE TECH WARS.
AMAZON INTRODUCED A NEW TABLET COMPUTER... WHICH COULD GIVE APPLE SOME SERIOUS COMPETITION.
RANDALL PINKSTON HAS A LOOK... AND REACTION FROM THE TECH WORLD.
AMAZON TOOK THE WRAPS OFF ITS LATEST GADGET...

(bezos) it's called kindle fire

... CEO JEFF BEZOS INTRODUCED IT AS A HOT NEW CONTENDER IN THE TABLET WARS.

:10-:14 (Jeff Bezos/Amazon CEO) It's light, easy to hold in one hand, 14.6 ounces.

THE TABLET COMES WITH A 7-INCH COLOR DISPLAY. IT HAS A TOUCH SCREEN AND OPERATES ON GOOGLE'S ANDROID SOFTWARE. AND IT GIVES USERS DIRECT ACCESS TO AMAZON'S HUGE COLLECTION OF BOOKS, VIDEOS AND MUSIC - AS WELL AS GAMES AND APPS.

BUT THE BIGGEST DRAW - MAY BE THE PRICE.

(bezos) "it's a hundred ninety nine dollars"

THAT'S LESS THAN HALF THE COST OF APPLE'S I-PAD - WHICH STARTS AT 499.

:38-:44 (Paul Reynolds/Consumer Reports) THIS IS AN EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE PRICE AND IT'S GOING TO BE DIFFICULT FOR OTHER MANUFACTURERS TO COMPETE WITH IT.

:45-:51 (Randall Pinkston/New York) Amazon took a page from Apple's book for this announcement. It kept the details secret - and let the hype build.

AND MUCH LIKE APPLE'S FORMER CEO STEVE JOBS, AMAZON'S CHIEF EXECUTIVE ROAMED THE STAGE IN FRONT OF A GIANT DISPLAY.

Sot "we're building premium products at non premium prices"

THE BIG QUESTION..IS WHETHER THE KINDLE FIRE WILL BE THE FIRST REAL CHALLENGE TO THE I-PAD. OTHER CONTENDERS - FROM HEWLETT PACKARD TO RESEARCH IN MOTION HAVE FALLEN SHORT. AND APPLE SOLD OVER 9-MILLION I-PADS IN THE LAST QUARTER ALONE.

1:16-1:23 (BRIDGET CAREY, SR. EDITOR, C-NET.COM ) They're really going to be a strong competitor to the I Pad because of how much media Amazon has in eco-system.

THE KINDLE FIRE GOES ON SALE JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAY RUSH. AMAZON IS TAKING PRE-ORDERS NOW..BUT WON'T START SHIPPING UNTIL NOVEMBER 15TH. AMAZON ALSO ANNOUNCED UPGRADED VERSIONS OF ITS POPULAR E-READER.
A TOUCH-SCREEN KINDLE STARTS AT 99 DOLLARS... WHILE THE BASIC VERSION DROPS TO 79.
APPLE DID NOT RESPOND TO REQUESTS FOR COMMENTS ABOUT TODAY'S ANNOUNCEMENT.
