MACON MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT SAYS HE PLANS TO TRY AGAIN TO CONVINCE CITY COUNCIL TO AUTHORIZE FUNDS FOR SIX NEW POLICE OFFICERS.
LAST NIGHT... THE PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE VOTED NOT TO ACT ON THE REQUEST.
REICHERT SAYS POLICE CHIEF MIKE BURN'S PITCH MAY HAVE LACKED A CLEAR VISION ABOUT HOW THE OFFICERS WOULD BE USED TO STRENGTHEN THE CITY'S YOUTH INTERVENTION DIVISION.
BUT REICHERT SAYS HE PLANS TO GIVE COUNCIL MORE DETAILS.
THE MAYOR ASKED BURNS TO COME UP WITH A PLAN TO IMPROVE YOUTH ANTI-CRIME PROGRAMS... AND SUPPORTS HIS IDEA TO HIRE OFFICERS.
"It's a statement of emphasis on a new program, one that has been neglected and under funded in the past. We're going to elevate this program. We're going to decide as police department, that these services are important."
LAST NIGHT....PUBLIC SAFETY CHAIRMAN VIRGIL WATKINS SAID CHIEF BURNS' PLAN LACKED INNOVATION.
BURNS TOLD 13WMAZ THAT HE HOPED ADDING MORE OFFICERS TO EXISTING YOUTH PROGRAMS... WOULD REACH MORE KIDS.
BUT REICHERT SAYS HE WON'T BE SATISFIED WITH SPENDING THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS ON NEW OFFICERS... IF THEY DON'T DEVELOP NEW PROGRAMS AND HE HOPES THE CHIEF AGREES.
"But I would hope what he was trying to say was if you don't do anything other than more of what we'd been doing that's really not going to be productive. What we really need to do is get a captain level position in that they can help design a new, better, enhanced service division for youth and intervention."
CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS ALSO SPENT TIME DISCUSSING THE ROLE OF POLICE IN KEEPING KIDS ON THE RIGHT TRACK.

BIBB COUNTY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT... ROMAIN DALLEMAND ALSO SPOKE....SAYING THEY'RE WORKING TO GET PARENTS TO PARTNER WITH THE SCHOOL SYSTEM... TO KEEP KIDS IN SCHOOL.
HE SAYS HE WANTS TO INVOLVE THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY... AND IF YOU SEE A SCHOOL-AGED CHILD WALKING THE STREETS DURING SCHOOL HOURS... DALLEMAND WANTS YOU TO CALL DFACS AT 478-751-6051.
AGAIN... THAT NUMBER... 478-751-6051.

FIFTY-FIVE DEMOCRATS MET LAST NIGHT AND SIGNED A PETITION THAT LISTED 15 REASONS FOR WANTING MORTON REMOVED.
THE REASONS INCLUDED FAILING TO SEND OUT PROPER NOTICES... AND NOT CALLING MEETINGS.
A MAJOR COMPLAINT ALLEGES THAT MORTON JOINED FORCES WITH REPUBLICANS TO DEFEAT DEMOCRATS.
THE GROUP SAYS MORTON HOOKED UP WITH MOVE MACON FORWARD... A NON-PARTISAN GROUP THAT SUPPORTED ROBERT REICHERT'S RE-ELECTION.
THE GROUP ALSO SUPPORTED SENATOR MIRIAM PARIS IN A SPECIAL ELECTION
FORMER MAYOR C. JACK ELLIS SAYS THE PARTY CHAIRMAN SHOULDN'T TAKE SIDES IN PRIMARIES.
C. Jack Ellis, Former Macon Mayor: If you are the chair of the Democratic Party, you have absolutely no business whatsoever involved in a primary, a Democratic primary, have no business there.

ENGINEERS ARE READY TO CHECK EVERY INCH OF THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT FROM THE OUTSIDE.
THEY'LL BE RAPPELLING DOWN THE SIDE OF THE STRUCTURE TO LOOK FOR MORE DAMAGE FROM LAST MONTH'S EARTHQUAKE.
ONE PARK RANGER WAS ALONE WITH VISITORS ON THE OBSERVATION DECK WHEN THE TREMOR SHOOK THE MONUMENT.
DANIELLE NOTTINGHAM TALKED WITH HER NEAR THE DAMAGED NATIONAL ICON.
An engineer at the top of the Washington Monument is getting comfortable with the rigging he'll use to rappel down the sides.
When the weather improves a team of climbers will check every inch of the 555-foot structure for earthquake damage.
Park Ranger Nikolette Williams was almost that high -- when the 5-point-8 magnitude quake struck last month.
(SOT: NIKOLETTE WILLIAMS, PARK RANGER) - "I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S AN ATTACK, IF IT'S AN EARTHQUAKE. WHATEVER IT IS, WE NEED TO BE AT THE BOTTOM"
This security video shows her on the observation deck with visitors - when the monument began to shake.
(SOT: NIKOLETTE WILLIAMS, PARK RANGER) - "WHENEVER I RUN BACK UP TO THE NEXT LEVEL AND DO ONE LAST CHECK TO MAKE SURE I'VE GOTTEN ALL THE VISITORS YOU SEE ME FLY BY LIKE A FLASH ON THE VIDEO. I WAS SO SCARED BUT I WAS RUNNING FAST TO GET OUT OF THE DANGER ZONE"
(STANDUP BRIDGE: Danielle Nottingham / CBS NEWS / WASHINGTON) - "Williams and all 20 visitors climbed down 897 steps in 10 minutes. Engineers will cover same ground from the outside, taking photos of the stones as they rappel down each side of the monument"
The work caught the attention of visitors on the ground - like Jeff Dixon, who was on the National Mall the day of the earthquake.
(SOT: JEFF DIXON / MARYLAND RESIDENT) - "I SEE THEY HAVE A COUPLE OF PEOPLE AT THE TOP. WOW, THIS IS GOING TO BE COOL"
Tourists will have to view the popular attraction from a distance for a while. Park Service officials don't know yet how long the repairs will take or when they'll be able to reopen the monument.
>> THERE ARE ENGINEERS WORKING INSIDE THE MONUMENT AS WELL.
THE AUGUST EARTHQUAKE ALSO DAMAGED THE BUILDING'S ELEVATOR.
HIGH WINDS FROM A MID-AFTERNOON HAIL STORM RIPPED THE ROOF OFF A MACON WAREHOUSE.
THE WAREHOUSE ON SEVENTH STREET IS ABOUT OWNED BY WILLINGHAM SASH AND DOOR COMPANY
THEIR PROJECT MANAGER...BENTON POOLE SAYS MACON LITTLE THEATRE STORED PROPS THERE... ALONG WITH ABOUT 400-THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF ANTIQUES.
HE SAID RAIN DRENCHED MANY OF THE ITEMS AFTER THE ROOF BLEW OFF.
THE DEBRIS ENDED UP BEHIND THE BUILDING WHERE ONE LARGE TREE WAS UPROOTED.
HE ESTIMATES IT'LL TAKE 100 TO 150-THOUSAND DOLLARS TO REPLACE THE ROOF.
NOBODY WAS INJURED.
POOLE SAID IT LOOKED TO HIM...LIKE THE DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY CIRCULAR WINDS.
"oh we had a lot of hail. We were in our showroom and the door blew open. You could feel the draft trying to suck through the building and you could kinda see rotation in the air all the way accross our parking lot. I mean you couldn't even see the builing accross the parking lot. And as oon as that went through... it hailed for a good 30 minutes."
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE REPORTS WIND GUSTS UP TO 40 MILES AN HOUR, BUT NO TORNADIC ACTIVITY.
METEOROLOGIST MIKE FULLER HAS BEEN TRACKING THE STORMS OUT OF CENTRAL GEORGIA... AND HE'S JOINING US WITH A LOOK AT WHAT WE CAN EXPECT FOR THE REST OF THE NIGHT.
THANKS MIKE.. WE'LL TALK WITH YOU AGAIN IN JUST A FEW MINUTES.
AMAZON HAS PLANS TO INTRODUCE A NEW PRODUCT TOMORROW.
THEY'RE KEEPING THE SPECIFICS UNDER WRAPS... BUT ANALYSTS SUSPECT IT'S A NEW VERSION OF THE POPULAR KINDLE.
THE QUESTION IS WHETHER IT WILL HAVE MORE IN COMMON WITH OTHER E-READERS LIKE BARNES AND NOBLE'S NOOK... OR TABLETS LIKE THE I-PAD.
CNET'S KARA TSUBOI TAKES A LOOK... IN TONIGHT'S GEEK 13.
TRACK ONE: It's been over a year since Amazon introduced its last big product, the Kindle Three. So experts say it's due time for a complete upgrade or update of features to stay competitive.
Bridget Carey / CNET Senior Editor
"After all Barnes and Noble and Sony's e-reader both have touchscreens, so why not Kindle?"
TRACK TWO: An update could also mean a lower price point of less than one hundred dollars. But experts suspect an upgrade is more likely.
Bridget Carey / CNET Senior Editor
"It's going to be a 7-inch Android tablet and it's really going to be the answer to Barnes and Noble's Nook color tablet."
TRACK THREE: A more tablet-like device would also position Amazon to compete directly with giant in the market: Apple's iPad.
Bridget Carey / CNET Senior Editor
"For the first time, we have something with a really big backbone. And that's Amazon with its eco-system of music, video and apps. So for once, Apple's got some strong competition."
Kara Tsuboi / ON CAMERA STANDUP
"Rumored to cost 249-dollars, it'd be cheaper than the iPad, but right in line with the Nook color.
EXPERTS SAY THE NEW PRODUCT WILL LIKELY BE CALLED THE KINDLE FIRE.
AMAZON'S PRESS EVENT STARTS AT 10 TOMORROW MORNING.
AND APPLE'S PLANNING A PRESS EVENT OF ITS OWN... A WEEK FROM TODAY.
THE COMPANY'S LONG-AWAITED I-PHONE FIVE IS EXPECTED TO BE THE STAR ATTRACTION OF THE EVENT AT APPLE'S CALIFORNIA HEADQUARTERS.
IT'S BEEN 15 MONTHS SINCE THE I-PHONE FOUR HIT SHELVES... THE LONGEST LAG BETWEEN NEW MODELS SINCE THE PHONE DEBUTED IN 2007.
AS ALWAYS... THE NEXT GENERATION I-PHONE HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF INTENSE SPECULATION.
SOME OF THE SPECULATION INCLUDES AN EIGHT-MEGAPIXEL CAMERA... LONGER BATTERY LIFE... AND AVAILABILITY ON THE SPRINT NETWORK.
