<<opening for eyewitness news at eleven>> GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
I'M FRANK MALLOY..
AND I'M LEAH JOHNSON..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

PUT UP... OR SHUT UP...
THOSE ARE THE WORDS OF MACON CITY COUNCILMAN LOUIS TOMPKINS.
AND THE CITY MAY BE READY TO DO JUST THAT.
AS PART OF A NEW VIOLENCE PREVENTION INTIATIVE THE MAYOR SAYS HE'S READY TO ADD NEW OFFICERS TO THE POLICE FORCE.
AND AS ELEANOR LISSITZYN EXPLAINS... THAT'S JUST ONE PART OF THE CITY'S EFFORT.
MACON MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT SAYS HE'LL ASK CITY COUNCIL TO APPROVE THREE HUNDRED AND SIXTY THOUSAND DOLLARS TO ADD SIX OFFICERS TO THE POLICE FORCE... AS PART OF NEW CRIME PREVENTION STRATEGY.
Reichert: "The Macon Police Department has not lost control of the streets."
IN RESPONSE TO A RECENT WAVE OF SHOOTINGS.... POLICE CHIEF MIKE BURNS TOLD THE AUDIENCE AT THURSDAY'S COUNCIL PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING... POLICE ARE DOING THEIR JOBS.
Burns: "Let us do our task, without criticisim or Monday morning quarterback."
BUT HE SAYS THERE'S ROOM FOR IMPROVMENT...
AND LAID OUT A THREE POINT PLAN... FOR TACKLING YOUTH AND GANG VIOLENCE.
HE SAYS THE FIRST PART... IS CONTINUING STRICT ENFORCEMENT.
It's like the broken window theory, small violations lead to larger violations."
HE SAYS THEY'LL ALSO ADD AT LEAST FIVE OFFICERS TO YOUTH INTERVENTION PROGRAMS.
"We'll also have enough folks that we can help mentor our school children after school."
THE CHIEF WILL ALSO DEDICATE AN OFFICER TO GETTING ILLEGAL WEAPONS OFF THE STREETS.
"Presently we run a trace on every gun we take off the street, but by putting somebody with ATF, that trace can go from local to countrywide."
CHIEF BURNS SAYS THE CITY NEEDS EFFECTIVE CURFEW ENFORCEMENT... WHICH MIGHT REQUIRE CHANGING THE LAW.
"If it's really gonna help us at all, it at least needs to be 17 year olds and under."
THE TEEN CURFEW IS CURRENTLY MIDNIGHT... BUT BURNS RECOMMENDED MAKING IT EARLIER ON WEEKNIGHTS.
HE ALSO POINTED OUT THAT DESPITE ALL THE PUBLICITY SURROWNDING RECENT VIOLENCE... SHOOTINGS IN MACON ARE ACTUALLY DOWN ABOUT 50% SINCE 2008.
THERE WAS TIME AFTER THE PRESENTATIONS FOR AUDIENCE MEMBERS TO RESPOND TO REICHERT AND BURNS' IDEAS.
SEVERAL PEOPLE COMMENTED ON THE FACT THAT IT WILL TAKE MORE THAN GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION... IT WILL ALSO TAKE COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT.
"You're talking about adding more communitys. Committes and all this different stuff you're adding. What about our children! While you're out there adding committees, our children out there shooting, killing eachother."
"A lot of people that in this room, that on these committees. They need to be out there in the streets, they need to be out there talking to these communities. Because nobody sees you. Ever.'

WESTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL WILL SOON GET ITS PRINCIPAL BACK.
AFTER TONIGHT'S BIBB COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD MEETING - SUPERINTENDENT ROMAIN DALLEMAND RELEASED A WRITTEN STATEMENT SAYING LAURA PERKINS WOULD BE REINSTATED.
PERKINS HAD BEEN ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE FOR ABOUT A MONTH AFTER DALLAMAND ACCUSED HER OF OF NOT FOLLOWING PROPER PROCEDURE TO HIRE A CONSULTANT.
DALLEMAND DECLINED COMMENT BUT RELEASED A STATEMENT SAYING..
DALLEMAND SAYS HE MADE THE DECISION AFTER A SCHOOL DISTRICT INVESTIGATION REVEALED... AMONG OTHER THINGS.. THAT THE POLICY PERKINS HAD ALLEGEDLY VIOLATED WASN'T CLEARLY STATED.
PERKINS ALSO RELEASED A STATEMENT THANKING DALLEMAND FOR RECONSIDERING THE FACTS AND THANKING HER SUPPORTERS.

REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL HERMAN CAIN MADE A CAMPAIGN STOP THROUGH CENTRAL GEORGIA TODAY.
DURING HIS STOP IN WARNER ROBINS HE OUTLINED HIS 9-9-9 PROPOSAL.
IT WOULD REDUCE THE CURRENT PERSONAL INCOME TAX LEVELS TO NINE PERCENT... ESTABLISH A NINE PERCENT SALES TAX... AND CREATE A NINE PERCENT BUSINESS FLAT TAX.
CAIN SAYS THAT WOULD THROW OUT THE TAX CODE... SAVE TAXPAYERS 430 BILLION DOLLARS... AND REPLACE PAYROLL.. CAPITAL GAINS AND ESTATE TAXES.
HE ALSO TALKED ABOUT SOCIAL SECURITY OVERHAUL... AND SAYS HE WOULD PATTERN IT AFTER A SYSTEM IN GALVESTON COUNTY... TEXAS.
Herman Cain, Republican Presidential Hopeful: The Galveston County municipal employees, they have an account with their name on it. It works very similar to a 401K, and so when they retire, they've got money in an account that has their name on it.
A FEW WEEKS AGO.. CAIN TOOK FIRST IN A STRAW POLL TAKEN AT THE ANNUAL G-O-P FISH FRY IN PERRY.
HE HOPES TO BUILD ON THAT BY PUSHING WHAT HE CALLS A SOLUTIONS-BASED CAMPAIGN INSTEAD OF POLITICAL RHETORIC.
YOU CAN SEE MORE OF OUR INTERVIEW WITH HERMAN CAIN TOMORROW AT 6-30 A-M ON EYEWITNESS NEWS MORNIN'.

SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED DURING A RAID THAT SHUT DOWN A DODGE COUNTY CLUB... THAT'S ACCORDING TO SHERIFF JEFF HINSON.

THE SHERIFF SAYS IT'S BEEN A PROBLEM FOR A WHILE.
Sheriff Jeff Hinson:"There a lot of reisdential homes right around this area a lot of them have small children that go to school. I was getting several visits a day by people in this area that were very upset about letting the music, loud music and all go on."
THE SHERIFF SAYS THEY WARNED THE OWNERS SEVERAL MONTHS AGO ABOUT SELLING ALCOHOL IN THE COUNTY... BUT THEY CONTINUED TO SELL.
HEY SAYS THEY ALSO ARRESTED SEVERAL PEOPLE IN JULY FOR DRUGS.. TRAFFIC CHARGES AND OUTSTANDING ARREST WARRANTS AT CHECKPOINTS NEAR THE CLUB.

THIRTY ACCUSED DRUG DEALERS WERE ARRESTED TODAY IN MILLEDGEVILLE AND BALDWIN COUNTY..
THAT'S ACCORDING TO BALDWIN COUNTY SHERIFF BILL MASSEE..
THE ARRESTS CAME AFTER AN ELEVEN MONTH UNDERCOVER INVESTIGATION... BY THE MILLEDGEVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT... BALDWIN COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE... AND THE OCMULGEE DRUG TASK FORCE.
MARC MANSFIELD WITH THE OCMULGEE DRUG TASK FORCE SAYS OPERATION TEAMWORK UNDERCOVER OFFICERS HIT THE STREETS.
THEY SPENT MORE THAN 5 THOUSAND DOLLARS BUYING TWO FORMS OF COCAINE ALONG WITH MARIJUANA... AND MOLLY... WHICH HE SAYS IS A DERIVATIVE OF ECSTASY.
MASSEE SAID A HANDFUL OF DEALERS SOLD TO UNDERCOVER OFFICERS OUTSIDE A CONVENIENCE STORE.
THEY ALSO ARRESTED TWO COLLEGE STUDENTS SELLING DRUGS OUTSIDE A DOWNTOWN BAR.
Sheriff Bill Massee, Baldwin County: "Anytime we arrest people on undercover sales, we gather a tremendous amount of intelligence. It's not just an arrest, but it's what we found out during the investigation, who they're associated with, where they're getting their drugs, where they're selling their drugs."
MASSEE SAYS THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE ALSO HAS A WARRANT OUT FOR JARRON TORRANCE WHO WAS INVOLVED IN A SHOOTING LAST NIGHT AT A MILLEDGEVILLE APARTMENT BUILDING.
MASSEE SAYS TORRANCE IS WANTED ON DRUG CHARGES.
