AND I'M FRANK MALLOY..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX.
A STATE LAW THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO HELP GUN OWNERS....HAS HAD AN ODD SIDE EFFECT.
IT LIMITS THE AUTHORITY OF SCHOOL CAMPUS POLICE.
THAT'S CAUSING TRAFFIC PROBLEMS AROUND MANY SCHOOLS.
RANDALL SAVAGE HAS MORE ON THE UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES OF LAW.
<<video of car making u-turn at school
DOZENS OF SPRINGDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARENTS MAKE U-TURNS LIKE THAT....DUE TO A SIDE EFFECT OF A STATE GUN LAW.
UNDER THE LAW.... CAMPUS POLICE HAVE NO AUTHORITY OFF CAMPUS... THAT MEANS THEY CAN NO LONGER DIRECT TRAFFIC OFF SCHOOL GROUNDS.
AND PARENTS SAY THAT'S CAUSED TRAFFIC PROBLEMS IN THE MORNING...AND IN THE AFTERNOON... AROUND BIBB COUNTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.
BECAUSE OF THIS... SPRINGDALE ELEMENTARY.. SAYS DRIVERS CAN MAKE RIGHT TURNS ONLY... DURING STUDENT DROP OFF AND PICKUP TIMES..
SO PARENTS LIKE RACHEL RIGGINS GO RIGHT.. THEN MAKE U-TURNS AT NORTHSIDE CHRISTIAN CHURCH.
Rachel Riggins, Springdale Parent: Most of the time it's not very difficult to make that u-turn right there at the church. But there are several times that a line gets backed up and a lot of people are coming out and have to make a u-turn right there and a lot of people are backed up in line going this way to make the same u-turn.
CAMPUS POLICE CHIEF DANIEL DECOURSEY SAYS THE LACK OF A TRAFFIC COP AT THE SCHOOL... FORCED THEM TO CHANGE THE TRAFFIC POLICY..
Daniel DeCoursey, Police Chief: We had to change the traffic pattern for the safety of the students and parents and have them make right turns only off the school campus to basically facilitate the orderly flow of traffic.
BUT... PARENT MICHELLE VENDITTO PREFERRED THE SCHOOL TRAFFIC OFFICER OVER THE U-TURNS.
Michelle Venditto, Concerned Parent: We had no problems. He directed traffic wonderful. And then when he left, everything went to shams.
RANDALL SAVAGE.. 13 WMAZ.. EYEWITNESS NEWS.
>> BIBB COUNTY SCHOOLS POLICE CHIEF DANIEL DECOURSEY SAYS PEOPLE SHOULD CONTACT THEIR STATE LEGISLATORS IF THEY WANT TO CHANGE THAT LAW AND LET CAMPUS POLICE DIRECT TRAFFIC OUT ON THE STREETS AGAIN.
