GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
I'M FRANK MALLOY....THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

MACON MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT IS LOOKING INTO HOW TO ENFORCE THE CITY'S TEEN CURFEW LAW.
HE MET WITH POLICE CHIEF MIKE BURNS TO TALK ABOUT ABOUT THAT AND OTHER WAYS TO PREVENT VIOLENCE.
UNDER THE CURRENT LAW... ALL CHILDREN UNDER SIXTEEN... MUST BE OFF THE STREET BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND FIVE A-M.
REICHERT SAYS HE'S ASKED THE CITY ATTORNEY TO LOOK INTO LEGAL ISSUES.. THEN OFFICIALS WILL NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO IMPLEMENT THE LAW.
"We've got to figure out what to do with the children that we pick up, because as I said at the press conference yesterday if you pick one up and put him in a squad car you've taken the squad car out of service, because you can't ride the child around in the back of a squad car.
So you've got to have a place to take them and we're looking at opening up one or more of the recreation centers and using them as temporary facilities to house the kids until the parents can come to the recreation facility and pick them up."

DANIELLE NOTTINGHAM HAS MORE FROM WASHINGTON.
<<
A glance at the 9-11 commission report card shows America is safer and more secure than it was after the terrorist attacks.

But the commission tasked with finding ways to improve national security.. says some of the most important of its 41 recommendations have not been adequately carried out.

One of the biggest shortcomings: the inability of first responders to talk to one another.

:24 - :31
(SOT: Thomas Kean/9/11 Commission Chair)
"when fireman can't talk to policeman...people die."

Commissioners say the federal government needs to designate radio frequencies.. or have a private companies do it - the decision has languished in Congress.

:41 - :50
(SOT: James Thompson/9/11 Commissioner)
"Pick one, either one, get it done, 10 years we still can't talk to each other when disaster strikes!"

:51 - :59
(Standup Bridge: Danielle Nottingham/CBS News/White House)
"The report card also pointed a finger at the White House for not making the Director of National Intelligence the driving force behind national safety."

1:00 - 1:09
(SOT: John Lehman/9/11 Commissioner)
"It has vastly increased the beurocratic bloat that has made our intelligence must less than it should be."

Commissioners say Congress is also bloated and needs far fewer national safety committees.

And then in partnership with the White House, they need to finally decide what to do with the suspected terrorists that remain imprisoned in Guantanimo Bay.

Until then, the commission says the nation remains unprepared for a catastrophic disaster.
>> THE COMMISSION ALSO SAYS THE GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE SECTOR CAN DO A BETTER JOB OF SCREENING FOR EXPLOSIVES AND OTHER THREATS AT AIRPORTS.
