"Finally, we will pray. We will pray for wisdom, we will pray for discernment, we will pray for God's guidance. Any of us unaccompanied by prayer are bound to fail"
AN EMOTIONAL MOMENT FROM MACON MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT THIS AFTERNOO AS HE OUTLINED HIS PLAN FOR FIGHTING CRIME IN THE CITY.
HE SAYS WE NEED COOPERATION BETWEEN THE CITY... THE SCHOOLS... FAMILIES... AND THE RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY.
HELLO EVERYONE AND THANKS FOR JOINING US.I'M LORRA LYNCH JONES.
AND I'M FRANK MALLOY..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX.

THIS YEAR IN MACON... TWENTY SEVEN AGGRAVATED ASSAULTS...ELEVEN HOMICIDES... and... SIX TEENAGERS SHOT IN A WEEK'S TIME... ONE FATALLY.
THIS AFTERNOON... MACON POLICE ANNOUNCED AN ARREST IN ONE OF THOSE SHOOTINGS.
17 YEAR OLD TREVARUS KENDRICK FACES SEVERAL CHARGES ....INCLUDING AGGRAVATED ASSAULT.
HE'S ACCUSED OF SHOOTING TWO 16 YEAR OLDS NEAR A SOUTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL BUS STOP LAST WEDNESDAY.
THE SAME MORNING...THEY SAY HE ALSO POINTED AN ASSAULT WEAPON AT A THIRD TEEN...BUT IT JAMMED.
KENDRICK IS ALSO ACCUSED OF A SEPARATE DRIVE-BY SHOOTING LAST WEEK...AND OF TAKING PART IN GANG ACTIVITIES.
MACON MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT ADDRESSED THE CITY TODAY.... LAYING OUT A PLAN TO STOP THE VIOLENCE.
ELEANOR LISSITZYN WAS THERE.
"How many caskets got to roll? How many? Before it's really stopped?
FRUSTRATED CITIZENS LASHED OUT AT CITY HALL TUESDAY AFTERNOON... .
AS MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT... TRIED TO REASSURE THE CROWD... HE HAS A PLAN TO FIGHT A RECENT RASH OF YOUTH VIOLENCE.
'I feel a heavy burden to do something about it."
REICHERT PROMISED ACTION TO A CROWD OF ABOUT SIXTY
"We will seek a two part solution"
THE FIRST STEP... SAYS REICHERT... IS ARRESTING... AND PROSECUTING THE CRIMINALS.
"I personally will adovate they be punished to the full extent of the law."
HIS PREVENTION METHODS INCLUDED INCREASING POLICE PATROLS... MORE CHURCH OUTREACH TO YOUTH... CREATING A YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL... AND GIVING MORE JOB TRAINING TO AT RISK YOUTH THROUGH HIS OFFICE OF WORK FORCE AND DEVELOPMENT.
"It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another."
BUT FOR SOME IN THE AUDIENCE... THE MAYOR'S PLAN WAS TOO MUCH OF THE SAME.
"I got a plan... they want to shoot at eachother.... round 'em up and ship em to Afganistan."
FRIGHTENED... AND FED UP... AUDIENCE MEMBERS TASKED THOSE IN CITY HALL.... AND IN THE STREETS... WITH MORE ACTION
"It's not your all responsiblility to take take of what goes on in my house, I'm responsible for my children."
"We as a community go to first stand up and get our house in order."
ONE CULPRIT EVERYONE COULD POINT TO--- GANG CULTURE.
REICHERT SAYS THE LATEST RASH OF GUN VIOLENCE... ISN'T RANDOM.
RATHER HE SAYS IT'S DRIVEN BY WHAT HE CALLED HYBRID- GANGS... LOCAL GANGS... WHOVE BEEN FEUDING ON FACEBOOK .
THAT LEFT SOME PARENTS CONCERNED FOR THEIR CHILDREN.
"unless your youths are associated with one of these groups, they are not likely to be targeted."
LITTLE COMFORT... REICHERT SAYS.... FOR THE FAMILIES OF THOSE CHILDREN ALREADY HURT OR KILLED.

AFTER THE MAYOR SPOKE.... FORMER MAYOR C-JACK ELLIS... AND FORMER STATE SENATOR ROBERT BROWN... HELD THEIR OWN NEWS CONFERENCE ON CRIME.
BOTH MEN RAN FOR MAYOR THIS SUMMER... BUT LOST TO REICHERT.
BROWN SAID WE DON'T KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT WHO'S COMMITTING CRIME IN MACON.... WHILE ELLIS SAID A PLAN IS OVERDUE.
C. Jack Ellis, Former Macon Mayor: "The question must be asked where have you been for the past three and a half years...(clapping)... with your plan? Where was your plan last year when we had some 23 homicides in our city which we all realize one homicide is in fact one too many."
CRIME STATS REPORTED TO THE F-B-I LAST YEAR SHOW THAT MACON ACTUALLY HAD 22 HOMICIDES LAST YEAR...THE SAME AS IN ELLIS' LAST YEAR IN OFFICE.
THE FORMER MAYOR SAID HE AND BROWN WOULD SUPPORT ANY PLAN THAT'S QUOTE "IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE CITY."
