HELLO EVERYONE AND THANKS FOR JOINING US.I'M LORRA LYNCH JONES... THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX.
TWO BLOOMFIELD TEENAGERS ARE STILL IN CRITICAL CONDITION AT THE MEDICAL CENTER....AFTER BEING SHOT ON THEIR WAY TO SCHOOL YESTERDAY.
BUT BOTH BOYS ARE TELLING THEIR SIDE OF THE STORY... TO THEIR FAMILIES.
AMY AUBERT SPOKE WITH THE MOTHER OF HYMETHEUS JOHNSON....WHO'S NOW IN CRITICAL ...BUT STABLE.
HE TELLS HER....IT ALL STARTED WITH
A FACEBOOK FIGHT.
Hymetheus Johnson, the 16-year old shot in the chest Wednesday morning says he thinks he knows who did it. Thats' according to his mom, Erika Johnson.
According to Johnons, Hymetheus says he was alking with Shavon Bonner to his home on Nesbit to get a ride to school, when someone opened fire.
She says Hymetheus couldn't see the shooter, but they think one of the boys is from what she called the "eastside."
She describes the boys to be claiming their neighborhoods and says her son, Hymetheus is involved but she's not sure it's gang related.
She says he's never been arrested but she enrolled him in military school to get him off the streets.
She thinks it started from a facebook fight and says another teen was shot earlier this week.
WE foudn a police report that says a 17-year old boy was shot Monday in the Bloomfield area.
Johnosn and Bonner are still recovering at the Medical Center
>> JOHNSON SAYS HER SON HAS SEVERAL BROKEN RIBS... BUT WAS ALERT AND ABLE TO SPEAK WEDNESDAY MORNING.
SHE SAYS THEY'RE STILL WAITING TO SEE IF HYMETHEUS NEEDS SURGERY.
BONNER HAD SURGERY AT THE MEDICAL CENTER THIS MORNING.
POLICE SPOKESWOMAN.. JAMI GAUDET SAYS POLICE CAN'T CONFIRM OR DENY JOHNSON'S STORY.
IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON THE SHOOTING... YOU CAN CALL CRIMESTOPPERS AT 1-877-68-CRIME.
MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT SAYS THE CITY WILL STRENGTHEN IT'S EFFORTS TO FIGHT CRIME... BY CONTINUING TO REACH OUT TO THE COMMUNITY AND TRY TO HELP THEM PROMOTE CHANGE ON THEIR OWN STREETS.
BUT HE SAYS PART OF THE PROBLEM IS ROOTED IN THE CULTURE... AND IT WILL TAKE MORE THAN POLICE PRESENCE TO CHANGE THAT.
"We've got some social issues and I have advocated that the churches need to be more involved. A great many of them already reaching out, got programs for after school, but the churches need to be more involved in a social change, so that this kind of conduct and behavior is no longer not only not cool, it's socially unacceptable.
This is a national phenomenon with this youth violence, and kind of the thug lifestyle that seems to be so popular in so many towns around the country, that's whats got to change. The people's mindset.
JAMI GAUDET WITH MACON POLICE SAYS THEY CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE THAT BLOOMFIELD SHOOTING... BUT THEY ARE NOT RELEASING ANY NEW INFORMATION TODAY.
TODAY IS ACCUSED MURDERER STEPHEN MCDANIEL'S 56TH DAY IN CUSTODY.
HE IS IN THE BIBB COUNTY JAIL... ACCUSED IN THE KILLING AND DISMEMBERING OF MERCER LAW GRAD... LAUREN GIDDINGS.
WHEN WE SPOKE TO MCDANIEL'S ATTORNEY YESTERDAY... HE TOLD US THAT HIS CLIENT'S JAIL TIME HAS TAKEN A TOLL ON HIS MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH.
WE SPOKE TO THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE TODAY ABOUT THE CONDITIONS INSIDE THE JAIL.
SPOKESMAN SEAN DEFOE SAYS... MCDANIEL HAS BEEN HELD IN A PRIVATE CELL IN THE INFIRMARY SINCE HIS ARREST.
HE SAYS THEY PUT HIM THERE TO KEEP HIM AWAY FROM THE GENERAL POPULATION... BECAUSE OF SAFETY CONCERNS.... NOT BECAUSE OF HEALTH PROBLEMS.
DEFOE SAYS MCDANIEL'S CELL HAS A WINDOW... AND A DOOR WHERE HE CAN SEE AND HEAR PEOPLE GO BY.
HE SAYS UNLIKE MOST INMATES... HE DOENS'T HAVE A T-V.
BUT HE IS ALLOWED TO CALL HIS ATTORNEY.... AND FAMILY.
DEFOE WOULDN'T TALK ABOUT MCDANIEL'S MEDICAL TREATMENT.
MCDANIEL IS SCHEDULED TO APPEAR IN COURT TOMORROW ON ALLEGATIONS THAT HE KILLED HIS NEIGHBOR AND FELLOW MERCER LAW GRADUATE... LAUREN GIDDINGS.
EARLIER THIS MONTH... MACON POLICE CHARGED HIM WITH FELONY MURDER.
HE'S BEEN IN JAIL SINCE JULY 1ST...WHEN HE WAS ACCUSED OF TWO BURGLARIES.
TWENTY-YEAR MACON DEFENSE ATTORNEY FRANKLIN HOGUE IS NOT INVOLVED IN THE CASE... BUT HE DESCRIBED WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN AT TOMORROW'S COMMITMENT HEARING:
HE SAID THE JUDGE HAS THREE OPTIONS.
HE COULD DISMISS THE FELONY MURDER CHARGE AGAINST MCDANIEL.
HE COULD REDUCE THE CHARGE...
OR ... THE JUDGE COULD RULE THAT THERE IS ENOUGH PROBABLE CAUSE... TO LET THE STATE TRY TO SEND THE CASE TO TRIAL.
TO PROVE THAT... PROSECUTORS WILL HAVE TO PRESENT EVIDENCE... AND THAT COULD REVEAL NEW DETAILS.
Franklin Hogue, Criminal Defense Lawyer: there'll be a police officer there, probably the lead agent, hearsay is allowed so the agent can just come and sum up their findings in the investigation and have to do that under oath in open court
HOGUE SAYS THAT GIVES MCDANIEL'S ATTORNEY HIS FIRST CHANCE TO HEAR THEIR CASE.
Franklin Hogue, Criminal Defense Lawyer: "what the defense usually does is just listens very carefully during the testimony of the police officer and then bases the questions asked off of what you hear right there on the spot"
HOGUE SAYS THE HEARING ENDS WHEN THE JUDGE SAYS HE'S HEARD ENOUGH TO MAKE A RULING.
IT'S SET FOR 9-30 A-M AT THE BIBB COUNTY COURTHOUSE.
WE PLAN TO SHOW THE HEARING LIVE ON OUR WEBSITE....13WMAZ-DOT-COM.
THE RUNOFF ELECTION ENDED A LITTLE MORE THAN A WEEK AGO... AND FORMER MACON MAYOR AND RECENT MAYORAL CANDIDATE C. JACK ELLIS IS LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE.
YESTERDAY.....HE ANNOUNCED THAT HE PLANS TO FORM A POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE.
HE'S JOINING US NOW TO TELL US MORE ABOUT HIS FUTURE.
- You said that the main goal of this PAC is to "Recruit, train, mentor potential candidates, and raise political awareness." How do you plan to do that?
- How will you fund it?
- You named two representatives at your press conference, Nikki Randall and Alan Peake. You said you did not feel like were doing the will of the people. Why?
- You also called for the resignation of the Bibb Elections Supervisor Elaine Carr, saying during an interview on election day with 13wmaz, that she appeared to be concerned about the outcome of the election. We played that soundbite on our newscasts yesterday. Do you stand-by that statement?
- You've said that you're job as a consultant is in Atlanta. Do you plan to return to Macon to organize your PAC?
- Do you plan to run again in four years?
- Crime was one of your themes during the campaign. In light of yesterday's shootings of two high school students, what do you believe police and the community should be doing?
